Shocked and upset to hear of the death of the great Irish pirate radio trailblazer John Thewlis who, with his brother Niall, owned and operated Community Radio 257 in Dollymount Co. Dublin on which I was a disc jockey back in the early Eighties.

John's station was located right inside the family house, and we enjoyed quite an avid listenership. Both highly technical, John and his brother Niall were seriously engaged in keeping the station on the air, and everyone involved worked as a team, delivering the best and most consistent programming we could. I may even have some cassette recordings in my collection of our output.

Mrs. Thewlis used to come into the studio with a pot of tea and a sandwich mountain on a big heavy tray. She was the heart and soul of the radio station, and everybody loves Mrs. T.

Great times on-air, with deejay colleagues Mark Byrne and others.

A gentleman and a scholar, was John. Rest in Peace old chap.

Thank you John, for making monumental memories happen for us all.

I’d like offer my very deepest condolences to you all. I was very saddened to hear of Johns passing. I’d not seen him for quite a number of years but have good memories working with him in radio.
