I only knew John as an affably engaging exemplar, very capable and positively motivated as a selfless advocate for the wellbeing, resilience and sustainability of small islands in Ireland and throughout Europe. In these capacities he served islanders exceptionally well, with beneficiaries in Baltic, Mediterranean and Atlantic regions. As an affiliate of the Scottish Islands Federation and also the European Small Islands Network, I experience sad loss of a perfectly gracious advocate for our aspirations and ambitions, recognising John as a committed family man and community member, but so much more besides.
— Terry Hegarty

Thank you so much to Sheila, Laura, Adam and Aoife for John’s beautiful service this Wednesday. It was very moving to discover how much more John had done that we - his ESIN friends - even knew, and to be with you all, his family, island and friends .
John was a very good and trusted friend of ESIN, and I will never forget the times we spent discussing ESIN matters together as he was always there for me as ESIN vice-chair and then for all of us as ESIN chair. I will certainly always remember the time when he and I were in Brussels together for the launch of the Smart Islands Declaration. Being in Bere island for our 2023 AGM will also stay in my memory and those of our fellow ESIN folks. John ‘s loss is truly tragic, but let’s his positive “can-do” attitude and selfless dedication to island matters, locally, nationally and internationally continue be an inspiration to all of us. I will never stop thinking: “what would John say, what would John do?” Sincere condoleances to you all,
Camille Dressler, ESIN Vice chair, SIF chair, isle of Eigg, Scotland
