I would like extend my deepest condolences to Annita and family on the loss of your beloved husband Austin. I was privileged enough to know him as a family friend and especially as a great teacher. He generously offered his time to help me enormously with my Leaving Certificate history project, as it was based on his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. His passion, patience and enthusiasm is something I will never forget and something I will be eternally grateful for. A courageous and modest man, Austin will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of his company. Rest in peace.

My condolonces to the Curry family on the death of Austin, a man of the highest integrity who possesed a great sense of Justice and who led from the front at great risk to himself, his wife and family.

Lets hope historians remember with accuracy his efforts and thoes of his colleagues in the SDLP who always pursued their political objectives by peaceful means.

The Curry family can be rightly proud of their Dad as he was one of the finest politicans on this Island for the past 60 years and was so well respected by the public at large.

Ireland owes so much to Austin, John Hume, Seamus Mallon and other like minded peace makers who are gone to their eternal reward.

Austin will forever be a history-maker in Northern Ireland, and had the rare distinction of making his mark politically on both sides of the border. On behalf of the Devlin family, my grandfather Paddy co-founded the Social Democratic and Labour Party with him, I would like to offer our condolences to Annita and his family. There is a wonderful line in his memoir All Hell Will Break Loose (2004) where he graciously refers to the lives and families of the SDLP founders, who all suffered at times with them. That speaks volumes of his graciousness and humanity, as well as his recognition of what matters. In political terms, Austin was the good man with the talents of a good politician: charisma, articulacy, empathy, being quick on your feet. In this case, the talents were deployed for the best reasons. I last saw him in May 2014 when he journeyed to Queen's University Belfast to talk about the UWC Strike and the fall of Sunningdale for a conference. He was one of the star performers on the day and shared a rapport, even with Loyalist leaders who had felled Sunningdale. And when some justifier of political violence began pontificating, Austin was there, as he had been before, to put that sentiment back in its box. He will be missed but at least he was there. Slán Austin, rest easy.

The passing of Austin Currie (1939 -2021) gives us all a chance to reflect on the remarkable contribution and legacy he made to improving life on the entire island of Ireland. The politician to be elected to both parliaments in Belfast and Dublin and serve as minister in both, his candidature in 1990 for the presidency was pipped at the post by Mary Robinson. In 1994 Fine Gael entered a coalition with Labour and the Democratic Left and returned to power as the Rainbow Alliance, with John Bruton as Taoiseach. Currie served for three years as a minister of state, with responsibility for children.
Requiescat in pace

— J J and Mary Sheil, Annaghdown, Co Galway
The universal nature of the warm and affectionate tributes to Austin from all four corners of Ireland are richly deserved.
At 28 years of age in Caledon
with the courage and articulacy of Bobby Kennedy, whom the world had lost just a fortnight previously, Austin didn’t flinch. His immense moral and physical courage is still etched in our minds from that time when we were young Dublin school children. Austin continued always to live a life of great public service combined with personal decency and dignity. Our deep condolences to Annita who stood shoulder to shoulder throughout with him. Also our thoughts are with his children, Estelle, Caitríona, Dualta, Austin and Emer who generously shared him with others during his unstinting life of public service.
May he rest in peace.

It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Austin, an SDLP political giant, a leader of vision, ideals and a lifelong drive to achieve the reality of a new Ireland which would leave sectarianism and inequality behind. It is important to remember that much was achieved by the civil rights campaign in which Austin was a driving force - such as fairer allocation of houses, voting and employment practices - before the shocking violence of the 70s and 80s hardened attitudes and made progress towards peace so much more difficult. Yet he continued in his commitment to peace and human rights for all even in the midst of personal attacks on himself and his family. Eamon and I have grateful memories of walking the roads across the constituency of Fermanagh and South Tyrone sharing in those campaigns with him despite the attacks from extremists on both sides.
With the completion of the Good Friday Agreement we owe him and his colleagues a great debt for their persistence in working towards the common good.
