My very sincere and belated condolences to Ferdie's family on his passing. He was the perfect gentleman and a brilliant engineer. I spent many hours with him in his attic office, enthralled by his engineering knowledge and inventiveness. He designed and supervised many projects for me and I will always be in his debt. To the O'Halloran family, there is no doubt that Shanakiel has lost someone very special: a great neighbour, thoughtful and kind, up for a chat any time you would see him. And never lost his enthusiasm for cycling around and getting out and about. He will be fondly remembered. Our sympathies, from all the Owens family.

"Go mbeidh na h-Aingeail sna Flaithís ag fanacht le Ferdie" is an old Irish Blessing which translates to say "May the angels in Heaven be waiting for our dear friend Ferdie RIP".
I have extremely fond memories of Ferdie as a great lecturer in structural engineering at UCC not only because of his skills in communicating highly advanced structural design theory (e.g. the appropriate consideration and application of plastic theory in structural design) but also as being very supportive in helping his students develop a sense of objectivity and personal responsibility; thus nurturing the student’s ability to work in teams as well as independently. All this was accompanied always with a generous dollop of Ferdie’s good humour and his great caring for each and every individual involved and recognition of their personal attributes and/or handicaps.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal

I was very sorry to hear of Ferdie's death. He was a distant colleague in UCC, but I got to know him much better on several skiing trips organised by the College sports officer in the 1970s. Ferdie was immediately bitten by the bug and from then on went several times a year with a group of friends. One by one they all died and he stopped skiing. Now he too is gone. I offer my condolences to you, his family.
— Ronny Swain
Ferdie will always be remembered with such warmth, affection and smiles in our family.
Wonderful Summers spent in Barleycove down through the years, watching Him wind surf, cycle, swim, play with grandchildren, but most of all happiest with a pint in his hand in Crookhaven village surrounded by his loving family. Feride was always so interested in everybody, always curious as to how you were. He was an integral part of his family. We were lucky enough to have had him in our company to witness that.
He will be so missed. Our deepest condolences to all The O’Hallorans.
May he rest in peace now.

Dick and the O'Halloran family, so sorry to hear of Ferdie's death. He was such an enthusiastic and dedicated lecturer. Passing his love of geometrical gymnastics, rebating, any old line in any old plane, and a very simple and clear understanding of forces and their resultant magnitude and direction in structural design. He was such a lovely person.
I last met him at Tommy Fleming's concert in UCC a few years ago when he was seated in front of me. While not as fleet of foot as he was in his younger years, the going in his eye and engaging charm were undiminished. His contribution to UCC and it's engineering graduates is testamented by not alone his own constructed designs but those of all the engineering graduates he inspired. The slide rule used to represent his life was what he used for much of his life however in my time in College calculators arrived and later computers, he used them all with great skill. May he Rest In Peace.
