Back in the 1962/63 school year in Borris Vocational School, I did a “commercial” course with my school friend Joe Browne. We sat at the same desk every school-day for the year – the rest of the class were female students. Actually, we were the first boys in the school to pursue a commercial course – learning typewriting, shorthand, bookkeeping, etc., finishing the course in June or July 1963; Joe then went off to follow his career in life, and I started working in Red Mills. Back then, staying in contact was a difficult option – not like nowadays! I recall meeting Joe only once during all the 61 years that have passed since that time. And that now fills me with genuine regret and sadness as I look at Joe’s kindly face on his rip.ie obituary notice.

My sincere condolences to Joe’s wife Margaret and to his family Geraldine, Joseph and Orla – and to all their families and friends. And condolences to Joe’s sister Josie whom I also remember from Borris Vocational School, and also to his sister Eileen.
