Sincere sympathy to the extended Burke and Conroy families on the death of Joe. He was a brilliant musician, humble, witty and great company. I always looked forward to meeting him with his infectious sense of humour and lore of tunes and stories. Joe was a very knowledgeable musician who made an enormous contribution and was universally admired by the traditional music fraternity.
He will be sadly missed.

Comhbhrón ó chroí do Anne, Mary and the entire Burke, Conroy and Murphy families on the sad death of Joe Burke, RIP.
I was shocked when I heard of the death of Joe Burke, Ireland's greatest and most recognizable artiste for decades past.
Joe's humanity, kindness, wit and storytelling ability, complimented his superb musicianship, making him a favourite attraction wherever he went throughout the world, which is now a much poorer place without him.
I'll never forget his visits to Roscommon - he and Anne were the perfect musical combination on stage. The Comhaltas world misses Joe dearly.
Go ndéanfaidh Dia trócaire ar a anam uasal. Ní imithe uainn atá sé, ach imithe romhainn.

There's too much to say about Joe - and I think that I will blame drinking out of too many damp glasses for a lot of it! We first met in Fulham, London in 1959, the year that Joe won the All Ireland. One time we ended up in a restaurant in Fulham for a late drink. I happened to know the owner and, for a laugh, I introduced Joe as James Galway, the famous flautest - who had a similar beard to Joe. The owner wanted to hear some music so I went to the car and got Joe's flute. For us, the food was complimentary, the free champagne and wine were flowing and everyone in the restaurant had a fantastic time listening to James Galway on the flute. It was so good that I can't remember leaving, but we found the flute in the car the following morning, so we must have left at some point. So many happy memories of the legend Joe Burke. With our deepest sympathies, love and respect to Anne and all their family. Joe was one of the greats and he will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
— Colm O'Malley and family, Carraroe, Co Galway and London
My deepest sympathies Anne, and to the extended family. Joe was a great story and joke teller between the many tunes we played at the lessons. May he rest in peace.
— Claire Donnelly
My sincere sympathy to Ann, Mary and extended family on the great loss of your beloved Joe. I had the privilege of being on a Comhaltas tour of the UK in 1981 where Joe was the star attraction. He wore his musical brilliance very lightly on his shoulders, was most unassuming, kind and great fun. May he rest in peace in God’s love where no doubt he will continue to play heavenly music. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
