Goodbye for now cousin Joe, what a wonderful life you lived & so many people left with treasured memories of time spent with you. I will remember you for your lovely friendly smile. You were my father's (your uncle's) best man at his wedding, something, which took me as a child a bit of hard thinking to get my head around but that's just one of the interesting things of being part of a large family. Rest in peace Joe.
— Mary O'Reilly
When we were young, cousin, Joe was a big influence in our life. My late sisters Ruth, Nell and late brother Aubrey often spoke about Joe and remembered him with great fondness.

So sad to hear the news about my cousin Joe Joe. I have very fond memories of our childhood together in Dublin. We both attended the same junior school and also Rockwell College. I'll never forget, myself Joe Joe and the late JC O'Reilly playing with Joe Joe's model soldiers in his garden. Even at that age he was a budding soldier! Also lovely memories of us both, and my 2 sisters Thora and Dorothy going to the country in the summer helping bring in the harvest. God bless him and may he rest in peace.
— Gerry Clarebout

My condolences to family, friends and colleagues. Our cousin Joe was a huge presence during our early years. We knew him as ‘Joe Joe’, a regular visitor to our home in Templeogue, he was an impressive, warm and fun character to us children.

In later years ‘Joe Joe’ was a generous and welcoming host during visits to Dublin giving me a chance to step back into my childhood and of course sharing lots of family stories. Joe had a great passion for life and a wide range of interests.

May he rest in peace.
— Veronica Mythen

From an early age Joe knew my father Aubrey from his visits to their house when on leave from the British Army, and he remembered and retold the stories he overheard to me. He went on to support my mother Mary and Aubrey when Aubrey declined with dementia. He visited England frequently and hosted Mary on her later holidays alone to Ireland. A great gentleman.

On one of his visits to us in the UK, we walked to my local hostelry, where a chap complained about a salmon fishing trip he had taken to Ireland. Joe pointed out that the river he had visited was no use for salmon, where he should have visited, and went on to quote the name of the landlady in the hotel the man had stayed at, who was mightily surprised at Joe’s knowledge. Only one of my treasured memories. RIP Joe.
— Paul O'Reilly
As a boy I remember visits to the Dublin mountains with Joe in his Austin A40 and him picking me up from school. An abiding memory as a 9 year old was a tour of Portobellow Barracks. Joe stimulated an interest in me in the First World War and we shared conversations of battlefields we had visited. Joe visited us in Devon and more recently on our visits to see him in Dublin, he captivated us with his stories. He was a great conversationalist with a sharp wit. He will be missed by all the family but our memories of him will live on.
RIP Joe - we will always remember you.

My family and I have many happy memories of our times with cousin Joe. We were given a warm welcome to his house in Drumcondra and driven to several tourist attractions locally. He often spent Christmas with us in Rochdale and Manchester and escorted my mum , Jeanne, to his regimental dinners at Dublin Castle.
He was also very helpful and supportive to my own family history research into our families history.
RIP.
