I knew Joe through my job but he became a dear friend of ours. He was the epitome of resilience and we learnt so much from him. Those who knew him recognised his stubbornness but enjoyed his mischievousness and his company. Time to rest in peace Joe.

We were very saddened to hear of Joe’s sudden death. We got to know him over the past 40 years when celebrating many occasions with the O’Meara and O’Donnell families. Joe was always at the centre of these celebrations, including his 60th birthday dinner, which he really enjoyed.
He was a very gentle soul. May he rest in peace.
Our sincere condolences to his family and friends
— Martin and Mary Rouine
I'm sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I got to know him a little when he was staying at my mother's (Fidelma's) house in Calgary. One strong memory I have of Joe is of when he first saw the white (not brown!) eggs we had in the fridge and was clearly nervous about eating them. We reassured him that they, too, were chicken eggs. I enjoyed our drive out to the country with Joe.

Joe was clearly a searching soul at the time and I am glad to hear from the condolences that he appears to have found himself. My condolences to all who were close to him.
— Lorraine Copland
As so many have expressed, he was indeed a gentle soul, albeit one with a sharp wit. Rest in peace, Joe. We'll raise a glass to you on Christmas Eve.
— Celine Naughton and Jan van Embden
Dearest Joe, may you rest peacefully now. I will forever hold you in my memory. Particularly at this time of year - there has always been a seat for you at the O’Meara Christmas Table, and I hope your spirit will join us this year. You will be missed, and your chuckle never forgotten! May God bless you and keep you safe. All my love, Ciara XXX.
P.S My Mr. Men drawing (c.1990’s) you kept safely for so many years, and had signed by Bono, one St. Stephens Day - will be kept even more safe now!
— Ciara O Meara
RIP JOSEPH

What a lovely and gentle soul Joe was! He was unquestionably part of the OMearas family and we got to spend very nice Xmas celebrations together! Many stories told, jokes and lots of laughs !

Rest In peace Joe, he was such a happy witty person, 1st met him around this time last year, he was an absolute charmer, I have very fond memories, he would always brighten up my day, even if he was giving out to me over the soup or sandwich I'd serve him, you will be truly missed Joe. From Angelina (or madam as you called me) and all the staff at the terrace bar and kitchen 💔

My Dear Joe, May you Rest in Peace. You were a huge part of our Family. Our groomsman at our wedding. At Cormac and Ciara’s christenings , communion’s and confirmation’s. The Christmas Eve memories , putting the slide and trampoline together, always a screw missing.. We loved your sense of fun and wit. Love Janice x
— Janice O Meara
The brother I never had. I met joe 50 years ago and he has been part of our family ever since. He regarded our children as his. He was a gentle soul but stubborn as a mule! He was very good company with a dry wit and a healthy disrespect for institutional authorities.
Joe, rest in peace. You deserve it!
— Gerry OMeara
Blessed be his spirit.

I met Joe when he came to Canada to visit his Aunt Margaret Fidelma Shiel and her family. We had a lovely time together in Banff National Park.
— Glenda Hanson
Sympathy to Joe's family on the passing of Joe. A lovely quiet man and always a wave as we passed his house. May he rest in peace.
— Pat & Nancy Mullins
We were shocked to learn that Joe passed away unexpectedly. He has been for 60 years an integral part of our families, the O’Mearas and the O’Donnells. He first came “on holidays” to the O’Meara home at aged 10 and later stayed with my parents, Harry and Molly, when on leave from the quality restaurants in which he worked in the UK. When he returned to work in Shannon he spent most Christmases with my brother Gerry, his wife Janice and their two children Cormac and Ciara. Eamon and I celebrated his 70th birthday with him in April in Strokestown where he was born. We will miss his presence and his dry wit. R.I.P.
— Mary OMeara ODonnell and Eamon ODonnell
