I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Karen's passing. Like so many others, I met Karen whilst attending the Europa Donna Advocacy training course in Milan. It was wonderful to hear a fellow Irish accent among the crowd of European advocates; I quickly realised that Karen was a powerhouse... an articulate, approachable and extremely knowledgeable advocate for people affected by breast cancer. Though I only met her on a small number of occasions during that training course, I was struck by Karen's warmth, her elegance and intelligence. I've no doubt that her loss is keenly felt by all at Europa Donna and, in particular, by her husband, family and friends.
I hope that they gain strength and comfort from the sympathies offered. May Karen Rest in Peace. Dara

Sending my supportive thoughts to Clayton and Robin and Avril as they come to terms with the loss of Karen. I got to know Karen back in 2011 when she warmly welcomed me to breast cancer advocacy training in Milan. The whole world of breast cancer was so new to me, with my life only beginning a cancer journey the previous year when I was diagnosed. Karen made my decision to advocate for better services across Ireland and Europe feel like the absolute correct one and I will carry it on in her memory always. Karen was a tremendous power within Europe for creating crucial advancement in breast cancer policy, services and support. I was so proud to know Karen and always enjoyed our chats about Ireland when we met at European conferences. I hope you all (family and friends) get to share some time together to celebrate Karen in the not too distant future. Wishing you calmness, kindness and strength as you move forward one day at a time. Tara Byrne (volunteer Europa Donna Ireland)

I first met the inimitable Karen during the advocacy training course in Milan and she made a lasting impression on me. I knew her by reputation from other Irish advocates - “Don’t forget to bring the Barry’s decaf tea!” they told me (her favourite brand). Elegant, witty and determined, she was a role model for many advocates, I’ve no doubt. The fact that she was Irish and carrying out advocacy work at such a high level in Europe made me doubly proud.

Her death is a great loss to European women but I know her influence will live on in the hearts and minds of the hundreds of advocates she inspired through her brilliantly designed advocacy training course.
