A poem on the occasion of Kevin and Susan's wedding

I believe that
In another incarnation
I will find Susan and Kevin
Still musing a better word
To fit that moment of reflection

Susan taught us prose
Molly Bloom had no full stops in the GTI
We went to Taylor’s
On the eighth Wednesday night
And I knew this man called Kevin
From labours in our political past
Walking between doors in the West Ward

Susan and Kevin
From Philadelphia to Galway
Measured across Atlantic swells
A mystery finely woven

And Kevin taught poetry
Rising Homer’s ghost from stony grey soil
Men in Sea road
And on the sixth Friday night
We went to Sean Uí Neachtain’s for a birthday
Gary was there
And we had cake

Susan and Kevin
Their nets adrift for phrases
Caught each other
— Jim Mullarkey
I got to know Kevin trying to stop bailiffs from entering an anti-Poll Tax non-payer's home in Edmonton, London during the Thatcher era.
We were united in struggle yet argued - as we all did - on the correct strategy to overthrow the system.
I lost contact when he left for Ireland, where I too later ventured, meeting up with him many years later at a poetry reading in Tullamore.
I've never been into poetry myself, but he made it come alive.
Sad to hear of an old comrade's premature departure.
The struggle is diminished by his passing.
— Dave McKay, Ponders End to Athlone
Sincerest condolences to Susan and all the Higgins family on Kevin’s passing. As a fellow Sarcoidosis patient, Kevin thought me to not take myself or my disease too ‘seriously’ and to forever enjoy the art of satire. Farewell Kevin. You will be missed :(
— Sean Phelan
My condolences to Susan and to Kevin’s extended family at this sad time.
I was very fortunate to partake in Kevin’s poetry workshops.
— Paulene Kennelly
Sincere condolences to Susan and Kevin’s family. It’s a sad loss. I feel very fortunate to have been part of Kevin’s poetry groups in 2022. He had brilliant ideas for inspiring new poems, often drawing on poetry in translation. He wore his learning so lightly. So entertaining, he told great stories. He also made space for us to tell ours and always was a kind and curious listener. A gifted poet and mentor; such a pleasure to have known him.
— Maurice Quirke
Kevin was deeply kind to me over the years and I'm so grateful for him. We were all so lucky to have him and to have his sharp eye and his sharp wit. He was just brilliant. He'll be missed so much. My sincerest condolences to Kevin's family and to Susan - may you be comforted by memories of him.
— Ailbhe Darcy
My sympathy to Susan and Kevin’s family and friends. We in the working class movement have lost a fine political satirist. A man who clearly relished the opportunity to expose the hypocrisy and arrogance of the so- called elite. He was often very very funny. He is already missed.
— Anne McShane
I was one of Kevin's many students and first took his online course in 2016. It was an exhilarating and wonderful experience and so much more than a writing course. Also because of Kevin I got to be in the company of like minded writers, students and we had the wonderful opportunity to read alongside him at one of our gatherings. I can only imagine the many many lives he impacted in such a positive and uplifting way. I was very fortunate to have had him as a teacher. When I think of Kevin I think of possibility. Sincere sympathy to Susan and his family, may his smile and wit and love sustain you all in these difficult days. May he rest in peace.
— Roisin Browne, Dublin

Hello Susan.
My condolence and sincere sympathy to you on Kevin's death. I met him just once or twice a long time ago, but have been reading his poetry and about it, and enjoying the revealing bites he could invariably infuse it with. It is sad that he should die so young, and he is a great loss to you. You do have many very happy and loving memories, and of course his poetry and personality to carry forward with you through your sorrow: May he rest in peace. With regards, Seamus

I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to meet Kevin at Over the Edge in Galway when I read there in 2019. He was one of those people that you never forget. He was so present, so funny and I could tell he had a kind heart. His poetry was unique, brave and illuminating. The poetry world is poorer without him.
My thoughts are with you Susan. May your memories sustain you in the days ahead. May Kevin’s love be always warm in your heart. Deep blessings and love Raine ❤️

To Susan

I never met Kevin personally but felt somehow I knew him from the zoom workshops I attended and our shared politics. He was a unique mentor - so gentle, witty and generous. I'll remember him for his poetry, his teaching and his socialism. But above all for being such a lovely man. Condolences to you and his family.
— Janet Sillett
To Susan and to the Higgins family, we would like to pass on the deepest condolences of the Arts & Culture Service of Galway City Council on Kevin's passing.
Kevin's contribution to the artistic, literary and cultural life of the city of Galway has been properly and deservedly acknowledged since news of his untimely passing in the last week became known.
Over the years and in particular in the last 2 decades of 'Over The Edge', Kevin's tireless work, in partnership with Susan, in supporting, encouraging and growing the literary life of our city was unparalleled, generous and vital. The many tributes to Kevin made in recent days by both emerging and established writers is testament to the value of that work.
Kevin's own work as a poet, polemicist, satirist and mordant wit has also been deservedly celebrated.
Kevin made Galway a better place by his life's work. We thank him for it.
Go raibh maith agat agus slán.
— The Arts & Culture Service, Galway City Council

Kevin is a huge loss to all who knew him, and there are so many. It's hard to believe that I'll never again read a piece of fiction or poetry for you but I'm so do glad I was in your last workshop at GTI to November last year. I will treasure all of the memories. You encouraged us to write our uncensored truth. On one occasion i wrote of something very painful from my past and read it for our class group. Your support then is something I will never forget. That experience helped me more than years of therapy ever would. Thank you, Kevin. Teacher, role model, man of great integrity and so little judgement. You will be so missed.
— Siobhán Cunningham
