Kieran dropped in and out of our lives as is often the way with musicians. Each visit was a joy, he was an absolute gentleman, funny and clever. He was a good friend to my late husband Vin and they appeared on the same stage many times. Kieran's songwriting was the very best, full of insight and life experience. His guitar style, immediately recognisable, driving and dramatic. His concerts were fantastic. He will be missed so very much.
Condolences to the Halpin family and Maggie and the girls.
— Pat Garbutt

Sorry to hear of Kieran’s untimely passing. Condolences to all Kieran’s family and many friends. “All the songs we were singing, still in my ears ringing, and may be still heard where the Dee does flow down.“ Rest in peace Kieran.
— David Starkie
Poor old Kieran. Although I hadn't seen him for over 30 years I still considered him a friend and was genuinely saddened at his death. Went to school with him at the Brothers in Ardee where he always had his homework done and was always good for a cog. If a lesson proved boring you'd look across and see him scribbling away, putting the final touches to a song he was writing. And boy could he play that geetar! I used to watch his fingers dance over the fingerboard of his Yamaha 180 with the certainty of a man born to the thing, and it was a pleasure always to be in his company. In my mind I can still recall snatches of his songs from nearly 50 years ago that never made it to any of the albums.
Oh well. Time to get out the bottle I suppose and go on YouTube and mourn the man properly. Damp shirt cuffs tonight. Goodbye Kieran.
(From the Duke.)
— Sean Farrelly

Kieran used to sing one of my favourite songs, Tim Wood's Free Man, and his version will always be the best. His albums with Tom McConville are the stuff of legend and I am proud to own them. Music has lost a wonderful songsmith. Folkies in Cleveland and the North East are stunned by this loss. No one sings Free Man now.
— Ailsa MacKenzie
I first heard one of my favourite songs, Tim Wood's Free Man, in the early 1980s when Kieran sang it. No one sings it now. His albums with Tom McConville are the stuff of legend and I am proud to own them. The music world had lost a matchless performer and songwriter and folkies in Cleveland and the North East are stunned by this loss.
— Ailsa MacKenzie
Great inspirational artist to many. One of the 'Real Life'. RIP, Kieran, from your many friends in North East England x

It is with a heavy heart that I learnt of Kieran's passing.
Such a talented artist a genuine man and a good friend .
In 1982 Kieran and Tom McConville played Durham Town Hall one of their last gigs together in a series of concerts I organised.
In 1983 Kieran did a series of tours in England organised through my Chris .Johnson Folk Agency this carried on for several years.

At this time him and Prelude did a series of Metro Radio Road Shows at various places in the North East alongside radio DJ's.
During this time he stayed with me and my family, wrote songs which he recorded at this time.
Over the years I spent a New year with him and Joni and Aiden in Dublin, also spent time on the Scottish Borders with him ,Maggie and the girls.
I caught up with Kieran on many occasions over the years and went to as many of his gigs that I could, even met up at a Bully Wee concert in Rochester a couple of years ago when he called in to catch up with the band.
My sympathy and thoughts go out to Kieran's family Maggie and the girls.
Kieran was a wonderful person and a great loss to the music scene.

My sincere condolences to his family. We have been very close and shared many songs, lyrics and stories over the last almost 20 years. I will be forever grateful that we got to spend some time, sit down and talk when we met a few weeks ago, not knowing it would be the last time. Rest in peace, my beautiful friend. If you’re looking down from that great gig in the sky Kieran, I want you to know that I have almost forgiven you for what you did in my tent at Leeds festival in 1982. Thanks for all the music, craic, and total madness we sporadically shared from Nuremberg to Naas over the last forty- something years. I’m sure you’re still up to no good. Auf Wiedersehen mate.
