So sorry to hear about Liam’s untimely death, what a great loss. I was in Mount Sion school in the 1960’s and he showed great promise even then; I recall his forceful campaign to have the motto of Waterford changed to “Parva Roma” (Cardinal Rinuccini) instead of “Urbs Intacta”, presenting strongly to the city council at the time. A great socialist all his life with a lot more to give, his voice will be sadly missed. Condolences to the extended family.
— Frank Walsh Dunmore East
My deepest sympathy to Eoin, Susan and May on the sudden passing of Liam. I got to know Liam from Twitter and enjoyed his posts concerning so many matters from local to international. He was an extremely knowledgeable and talented person with a great wit. Like myself, he was very proud of his Waterford roots and, I did enjoy our few conversations over Twitter concerning the great rivalry between his Mount Sion and De La Salle, the school and club of my late mother's brothers as well as the local characters. May he RIP.
— Brian Howard, Ballyroan, Co Laois
Sincere sympathy to the Cahill family on the death of Liam.
It was always a pleasure to meet him in Leinster House and his warm and engaging manner endeared him to all.
May he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathy to the Cahill family on the sad and untimely passing of Liam. I had many dealings with him during his time in RTE News. He was an absolute gentleman - a 'fear uasal' in every sense of the term. He was also an outstanding journalist who always reported on industrial relations matters fairly and impartially, recognising that every dispute had to be settled eventually by both parties sitting down at the table to talk. Solas síoraí na bhFlaitheas dá anam uasal dílis. Mar adúirt fear an Oileáin fadó, 'ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann'.
— Cyril McIntyre retired CIE & Bus Éireann PR

Our very sincere sympathies on Liam's death. I knew Liam when I was Chairman of Dunsany GFC and he was a proud father of his son Eoin who was a talented underage footballer with the club. Liam was a very nice man, well spoken and well educated in so many areas of life and with a prolific and outstanding career to go with it. He was a frequent attender of games when Eoin was playing. He was a proud Waterford man and very proud of his county's ahievements. His late wife Patricia was a work colleague of my sister Mary in the Department of Agriculture and indeed she was a daughter of the late Martin Cannon who I knew well in tbe Forest and Wildlife Service in the mid 1970s. May the Lord have mercy on Liam's soul and may he be granted a deserved place in the heavenly kingdom. Our sincere sympathies to son Eoin, daughter Susan, his sister May and all his relatives and a wide circle of friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dhilis.

We swam in different parts of the same river – but both knew of each other without ever meeting And then, in a wholly different context, as chairperson of the Humanist Association I was asked to officiate at the Humanist Mid-West groups hosting of Liam’s lecture on the Limerick Soviet. Before the lecture we sat down to lunch together and talked, and talked and talked. An hour seemed to fly by in five minutes and then he presented a fascinating and flawless presentation on the Soviet. After that day we continued to keep in touch on social media. Liam, a wonderful writer and strategist, kept himself young by being both interesting and always interested and will be sorely missed. Codladh Sámh Liam.
— Steve Rawson

— Waterford neighbour
Susie and Eoin, I am truly lost for words to convey the sense of heartache and loss felt at your dad's untimely passing. He took a chance on me as a writer when I was fresh out of college and very wet behind the ears. He gave me free rein as a writer and though there were a couple of occasions I was on thin ice with regard to 'crossing the line', he once said to me "Anyone can make a mistake, but it says a lot about the character of the man who admits it".

As years went on, he went from seeming like a work colleague/boss to a genuine, caring and patient friend. Our last conversation was on the first anniversary of my dad's death (June 10th) where we agreed to exchange copies of our respective new books. I'll have to change the delivery address :(

Shocked and very sad to hear of Liam's sudden passing. He was in great form and as friendly as ever at an Irish Labour History Society event last month. His contribution to the Society and to the study of Irish history has been immense, including his publications on the Limerick Soviet and on International Brigade Volunteer (and cousin) Mossie Quinlan. Liam delivered two excellent talks (on in Limerick at the 2019 AGM) and another on Zoom last year.
He also delivered a great talk to local historians in Kilcullen, County Kildare in 2020. A pleasure to deal with.
Liam will be sorely missed.
My sympathies to his family and friends. May he Rest In Peace.
