My sincere sympathy to the O Brien family on the sad passing of Liam,. As a1970s teenager and avid sports fan during that golden decade of Muhammad Ali, the great Welsh rugby team and stars like Olga Korbutt and Mark Spitz to mention but a few, the memory of Liam Chunky O Brien in the Black and Amber hurling jersey of Kilkenny soloing through defenses with the Sliotar glued to his stick mostly in CrokePark on big hurling days one of the top memories that epitomized that era of my youth for me. As doctor to the Galway hurling team throughout the 1970s, I became well aware of Chunky as an outstanding hurler. After the 1975 hurling final I helped him celebrate his victory, which included his being named man of the match in Haddington Road, Dublin. Many years later, I often had the privilege of meeting Chunky with members of my family and friends, and we would celebrate his hurling achievements. Chunky was always kind enough to show us his many hurling medals and discuss hurling.
It was a privilege to witness his hurling skills, even from the losing team’s perspective. I am of the opinion that as a midfielder, he is unrivalled in terms of hurling skill and as a person ,he was a gentleman.
I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Liam (Chunky) O’Brien, may he Rest in Peace.
