It’s with great sadness I’ve learned of Miss Crotty’s passing. She taught with such humour, imagination and energy that her class was the highlight of the day. As Mary Ber mentioned Paul Duncan’s poetry reading my memory is of going to the language lab to study the lyrics of the Beatles’ White Album as an example of modern poetry. A teacher who taught us to learn every day. I think I can speak for all my class, it was our great privilege to have had such a teacher. May she rest in peace.
— Mary McCarthy, Class of 1976
Heartfelt sympathy to Gerard and Pat and all who loved Mary. Always inspiring, wise and full of fun - thank you Mary for bringing poetry to life , especially when you brought Paul Durcan to do a reading in our classroom in Loreto in the mid 70s .
— Mary Ber

Sincere condolences to Gerard, Pat, Michelle, the extended Crotty family and Mary’s many friends on your great loss.
Along with all of the other ex-pupils who have written heartfelt tributes, I have often reflected over the (many) years how very fortunate I was to have had Mary as a senior cycle English teacher.
She really was one of a kind… so memorable, such an inspiring mentor…a gifted academic, dedicated, passionate, formidable (scary even) challenging, entertaining, seriously witty articulate, always compassionate & generous.
She was ahead of her time, charismatic & dramatic with her irreverent infectious laugh.
She opened our eyes by teaching us how to think!
We were so lucky!
RIP
— Cathy Rea

Mary joined Loreto Youghal in 1997 as the first lay Principal and I was fortunate to have been her deputy until 2004. Mary was a happy presence in the school, always very approachable with the Loreto value of joy always to the fore. She had a bright and jolly personality. In her role as Principal, Mary made a unique and memorable contribution with boundless enthusiasm and infectious good humour. Mary had a positive influence on young lives and always worked to provide the best opportunities for all of her students. She encouraged students to believe in themselves to reach their potential. Compassion and care for her students was a priority and she always had their best interest at heart. Mary radiated enthusiasm and worked tirelessly to facilitate the amalgamation process. She was articulate and compassionate, always managing to see the bright side even in difficult times. I have fond memories of Mary and Michéle's warm hospitality in "Cafe Paris"
