Mary (Maisie) Fitzgerald
(née O'Connor)

My wife Sandi and I wish to extend our sincere condolences to the Fitzgerald family on the death of their matriarch, Maisie. We live in the United States and it is only through pure happenstance that we learned of her passing.

During Easter in 1992, Maisie and her husband Dermot invited us and our two young sons to visit them, although they had never met us, and knew only that I claimed to be Dermot's cousin from the U.S. (his aunt Anastasia's grandson).

Two more gracious hosts I cannot imagine than Maisie and Dermot Fitzgerald. They invited us into their home, took time from their day to give us a tour of their beautiful working farm, and insisted that we join them for dinner. Dermot showed us around their property, pointing with some pride to a stone in an old building that had an 18th century date carved in it. Their son John allowed my two boys to accompany him as he milked the cows. During dinner, either Mary or Aileen (neither Sandi nor I is quite certain which) gave Sandi a bit of background on some of the menu items. Later that evening, we learned much about my grandmother's family, and Maisie gamely attempted to teach me how to dance an Irish jig. At some point during our time at Gobbinstown, we visited the Fitzgerald gravesite where Dermot's grandparents and great grandparents are buried.

Sandi and I are truly grateful for having had the opportunity to meet and share time with such fine people.
