I consider Matt a role model for what it is to be a decent human being, which I witnessed first hand from living with the Whelan’s for two years in my late teens.
I witnessed him being an amazing Father and Husband, a very funny man who enjoyed a cheeky laugh with his family at home, especially getting a rise out of Rose!. He will be sadly missed by so many people. My deepest condolences to the whole family. May he rest in peace singing Irish Trad songs.

Matt was a total legend and backbone of my time playing Gaelic for Clontarf. He was a true gent and one of the reasons I played football for so long.

Sorry to hear the news of Matt’s passing and condolences to all his family. I have great memories of travelling with Matt and his brother’s to Dublin gaa games all over the country back in the late 70’s, early 80’s..Five or six of us packed into cars going to league and championship games, the sing-songs afterwards in places like Harry’s in Kinnegad and the Lower Deck on Mondays after an All-Ireland. I had the pleasure of working for Matt in the mid 80’s when he operated a Bedford lorry and a Van pulling groupage freight out of the B & I in the Docks. Rest in Peace, Matt.
