I have such wonderful memories or spending time with you and auntie bee and you and dad talking about the horses in the garden. What a lovely uncle you were to us all hope you and Dad are playing cards and betting on the horses love your niece Mairead xx

Uncle Matty was ever present throughout my childhood in Bristol and Ireland in the summer holidays. He was always fun, encouraging and had a calm and grounding demeanour. I always remember him imploring us to shoot with our weaker foot whilst playing football and not be concerned with looking silly if the ball went a mile off target. That spirit to be brave and do your best -and not be too concerned with the outcome -was one of many subtle lessons he taught us growing up. His passion for sport and outdoors was infectious, and his laugh was as explosive as it was distinctive. He always made me feel part of the family and though he was a man of few words, when he opened his mouth it was often hilarious or profound. I always appreciated him asking my opinion on things even as a youngster and deeply considering my response. A rare and esteeming quality that is so special. It was a blessing to be at home to see him put to rest, travelling with my mother, Auntie Mary and fiancée Anaïs, to support my Godmother Bee and cousins Teri, Peter, Matthew and Thomas in this difficult time. Matty will be sorely missed but certainly not forgotten.

It was only when he returned to live in Ireland that our paths crossed occasionally, but the main memories I have are of his cheerfulness and friendliness (love of golf) and how an encounter with him always lifted your spirits.
