To my young self, uncle Maurice was an occasional but somewhat awe-inspiring presence, always wearing his trademark dark suit, gravelly voiced and sometimes bearing unexpected gifts, like the biography of James Dean he gave me one birthday. Nothing added to his aura of dark mystery more than the antique swords he kept under his bed. Now that I am grown, I am inclined to remember the child in him too - the twinkle in his eye and his playful sense of humour. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Aoife, Judith, Paul and all who loved him.
— Jamie Leptien

Things I liked best about Maurice were his dead honesty at all times -- and no sentimental coating -- and his sheer determination to live so long as he could be able to probe a little more the last grains of meaning and depths of every moment of human life left to him. He was the most Nietzchean of artists this country will ever see. He wouldn't deny it, he loved German philosophers. The man read, then he painted, then he read. Thus he could talk so well.

I loved all this about Maurice. In the Irish Times a fellow named John Sullivan did a fine portrait of Maurice a few years back. He really caught him. Maurice the truth seeker.
— David Monagan
