Lynne Gordon I still remember him and Dan Gordon, one particular high jump competition at either Metro games or the Irish games (cant remember which now). Dan was doing his usual backward flop thingy to clear around 1.5 or 1.6m (I cant remember exactly what, but he will) Anyway, Mick just loped up and scissor jumped the same height. n He would do the flop thing, just didn't bother with the low heights. To Fionnuala and all of Michael's family,
My sincere sympathy on the loss, far too early, of a clearly exceptional man. For all his achievements, his love for and dedication to his family were surely the greatest and these must have come from his parents, who should never have had to bury their child.
May you all be sustained by the love you shared and the memories that will warm you and inspire you in the darkest, most testing times ahead. Laoise and Ríona are Michael's most precious gift to you all and to the world and they will bring the best of him forward into the future in everything they do. So he will always be with you in them.
Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal.
— Eithne O'Connell friend of Emer's

Fionnuala, Laoise agus Ríona, Emer, Bláthnaid agus Séan., agus bhur gcomhluadar ar fad.

Comhbhrón ó chroí faoi bhás anabaí Michael. Is léir gur duine an-speisialta a bhí ann agus gur cailliúint as cuimse a bhás. Tá súil agam go dtabharfaidh na cuimhní cinn áille a luaigh Fionnuala ina hóráid iontach lón anama di agus do na páistí agus do gach duine a raibh grá acu do Micheal agus iad ag tabhairt faoin saol gan é. Leaba i measc na naomh dó.

Fionnuala I came to know, like and respect Michael through our hard fought tussles over the chess board ,in Phibsboro chess club, down the years. Chess is my strength and I was hugely impressed how he always held his own, but was amazed and delighted to learn of his massive athletic accomplishments, in other areas where I would be totally at sea. Your moving eulogy at his funeral was the finest I ever heard; I was literally in tears. I got a glimpse of how much you love him and how fortunate he was to have you. I am keeping you in my prayers. Ni bheidh a leithead againn aris.

Dear Finnuala, Dee & Michael, Laura, Dave, Aisling and all the Delaneys,
There are no words to express the hole that Michael's passing leaves in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him, as well as his impact and influence on so many who looked up to him as their role model for living a fierce and fearless life. Michael never let anything stop him - in his quiet and unassuming way, he lived more and accomplished more in his 52 years than 20 other lifetimes put together. Sending your all our love and hugs during this very difficult time...
With love, Ellen & Kevin

He was an important part of the Fighting Blindness family and we wish to pay our respects for his contributions.

With all our love and thoughts to Finnuala, Laoise, Riona, Dee &Michael, Laura, Aisling, Dave and all the family,
In the absence of being able to share with you at this time our love, and deep sadness and grief at the loss of Michael, I have been sharing my fondest memories with my girls of my big cousin. Whatever age you were, Michael always let you feel he welcomed your company, you could chat with or be quiet with him, and would never feel awkward, and showed us all throughout his life, the quiet and fearless dignity of how he seemed to get on with life without complaint. He leaves us with memories of an exceptional calm, loving and good man to all he knew. We send our love.
— Maeve and Dave Dempsey

My dearest Dee and Michael, David, Laura, Aisling, Fionnuala and all Michael's loved ones,

My heart is breaking for your loss. Michael was a force - faced with challenges that might have broken the spirit of so many, he surmounted them and reached beyond. It is a testament to the love in his family that he was supported and embraced to reach for the stars, but it was the man himself who did so with such honor, dedication, patriotism and good humor.
Remembering a wonderful man and sending all my love to you at this sad time,
Always,
Joyce

Michael was a really nice guy, very friendly and always good humoured. I knew him well from the Chess scene and we were club mates for many years. He will be sadly missed by all his Chess friends.
My condolences to his family and in particular to his brother Dave who is also a friend of mine and works with me in UCD.

We will always have fond memories of Michael at Chess tournaments at home and abroad, when he represented Ireland with distinction. Michael had a sporting attitude and was always fun to be around no matter what the result. We especially remember 2015 in France when Fionnuala and Michael’s almost 2-year old daughter Laoise had her first taste of an Easter egg hunt in our bedroom. They were the best of times.
