Sincerest sympathy Mary on the passing of Michael. May he rest in peace.
— Martin O'Mahony
I first met Mike in September 1966 when the Lions played in Vancouver. We met in the line to buy tickets, Mike was a newcomer and I invited him to join Scribes Rugby Club which we had recently formed and needed players. Our friendship grew, Mike was working for a finance company United Dominions but was seeking other opportunities. A contact of mine named George Tidball had recently been granted the Canadian franchise for McDonald’s Hamburgers and had been badgering me to join him in the venture. I was not interested but I introduced Mike and he became the first employee of McDonald’s in Canada.
Our friendship endured and when he left Vancouver to help their expansion in Toronto and Montreal, we would still meet up. I celebrated in Dublin the day he signed the first lease on the Grafton street store for 30,000 punts a year, people thought he was crazy. Mike was a focused businessman and you could not meet a nicer kinder person. Later my wife Myrna and I continued to periodically meet in Florida, I’ll miss Mike but the memories will remain.
Love and condolences Mary
