Just heard of Michael's passing.
Even though I have not met his family I need to offer my condolences to each one of them for what I know is great loss.
My friend Mick and I go back a long way---from sharing digs in Salthill during an exciting character building period at UCG to summer holidays in London where we helped organise the railways and building industries...........

While our contact has been minimal in recent times
Mick was a big part of my youth and I feel happy and consoled to read so many people here echo my feelings on his passing.....HE WAS ONE GREAT GENTLEMEN.

God rest you Mick my friend
— Joe Riordan
Condolences to all of Mr O’Hara’s family and friends. A brilliant teacher( class of 98) who was rarely on time but brought Physics to life! Equally educational and hilarious he could turn a blackboard duster into a spectrophotometer and fostered a lifelong love of science.

During a physics class in 1971, Mick wanted to demonstrate an experiment using a solenoid but it wouldn't work for some reason. He said it needed oil. I put up my hand and told him to give me the keys to his car and I'd wipe some oil off the dipstick onto a piece of paper (he only needed a little). He gave me the keys and off I went. He performed the demonstration after I scavenged the oil. He was a clear and engaging teacher.
— Joseph O'Dea

Mick was a born teacher. He could maintain control in the classroom without belittling anyone. I, unfortunately, was one of his worst students but he never made me feel unwelcome. He was fascinating to follow up there at the blackboard. It's a sad day for great teaching.

I was very sad to hear of Mick’s passing. He was a great teacher at Templeogue College, and brought Physics to life in the lab. He could teach and entertain us at the same time. I’m sure many Logue boys went into science or engineering – like myself and others in Class of ‘81 – as a result of inspiration from Mr O’Hara’s classes. My condolences to Conor and all the O’Hara family. May Mick Rest in Peace.

Condolences to the O'Hara family. I have very fond memories of Mick in so many situations. He was a special person and his hearty laugh was infectious.
Of course, he was so innovative when teaching physics. I recall some sort of experiment where he could have shown light beams being scattered by chalkdust particles in the air but he explained that the experiment was much better demonstrated when he used cigarette smoke! Genius....
May he Rest in Peace
