Very sorry to hear about Michael, I used to love meeting him in the gym, we’d have great chats, he was always engaging, funny and interesting. Also he always had a few kind words of encouragement for my son who was learning to swim, just a lovely kind gentleman.

To Michaels Family, friends and colleagues, we are very sorry for your loss. Will miss
seeing him around Marlay view, with his nod of the head or a wave of the umbrella passing by to say hello.
RIP Michael
— Catherine & Paul (Marlay View)
So sorry to learn of Michael’s passing- he was a most welcoming and engaging man – I remember the first time I stepped inside the old Irish Times newsroom on D’Olier St in 2004 – he was over in a shot to welcome me with a firm handshake, a friendly smile, an inquiry as to where I was from and a great chat on hearing I had worked with The Kerryman.

I always enjoyed our conversations and his knowledge of the minutiae of Cork politics was remarkable, but he was always inquiring and learning more - I greatly enjoyed hearing his authoritative take on things – he was a great story teller, and he told his stories so well with that magnificent mellifluous Kerry baritone voice of his.

My sympathies to you all on your sad loss
— Barry Roche, Southern Correspondent, The Irish Times, Cork

I stopped to compliment him on the Friday slot but it didnt take long for football and kerrys chances to dominate the short chat . A lovely gentleman who will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Sadly, I couldn't make it to Michael's funeral, but I did watch it online and was very moved by Deirdra's heartfelt eulogy. It was so fitting that she concluded with a poem by "another great Kerryman, John B Keane", written as a warm tribute to his own father.

Michael was a great colleague from the good old days of the Irish Times in Fleet Street (a building that's long since gone), where he and I were among those who shared a lively bank of six desks at one end of the Newsroom, before he joined the paper's political staff in Leinster House.

I will always remember his Kerry humour and colourful story-telling. Even though I knew he hadn't been well in recent years, it was still a shock to learn that he had died suddenly, via Twitter/X, a medium on which his sane voice will be missed by so many of his followers, including me.

My deepest sympathy to Elizabeth and his entire family.
— Frank McDonald
My most sincere condolences to all of Michael,s family. With great thanks to R.I.P.ie it allow,s us to express in print to express our thoughts and insight,s into one of our fellow human beings and in this case Michael O Regan who for many years on tv and newspaper forensically interpeted the world of politic,s for us .I dont think that anything about Michael life in journalism has been left unsaid and it shows the esteem he was held in.Always turned out impeccably dressed he was a credit to his parents and family.I hope one day some member of his family may follow in his foot steps Unfortunately as it is said
Spectre and crown

Must tumble down
And in the dust be equal made
And rest with the
Poor crooked scythe and spade.
Rest easy Michael you were a master of your craft and a phoenable translator of life and politics and gifted with a superb dialect.May you rest in eternal peace and thank you.R.I.P

It is no mean achievement to spend your entire working life at the intersection of journalism and politics and to emerge unscathed with your reputation and integrity intact. Held in such high regard by all, Michael set the standards for balance, fairness, accuracy and context. He is a loss and his contributions will be missed.
I'd say he got some kick out of trending on Twitter...

Condolences to the O'Regan family on the passing of Michael.
All the good aspects in the human condition, Michael possessed each of these in abundance.
I started working in Leinster House in late 2000. I meet Michael soon after. Every encounter with Michael was enriching. He had this magical ability to make you feel better about yourself.
He was a fantastic journalist & a very fair minded person.
Michael attained the ultimate honour for those who worked in the environs of Leinster House the respect of the Oireachtas Ushers.
Michael was 100% a Kerryman but I regarded him as a honorary Dub also.
Football was never far away from our conversations, although a few years back he claimed to be suffering from short term memory loss re: footballing matters delivered in his beautiful Kerry lilt & accompanied with his mischievous smile. All part of the Kerry/ Dublin banter between us.
I am glad Michael got to experience the wonderfully special world of Grandparenthood. What a natural fit that was.
Michael was a caring person & it was a privilege to have known him.
My parents in law were citizens of both Kerry & Dublin also. My father in law Tom Joe Mulvihill of Ballylongford & Ballyfermot especially never lost his love for the place that formed him & here are a few lines he wrote about his native heath.

To you my native place
Contentment be your lot,
Though far away I am today
Forget you I cannot.
The fields by Shannonside.

I got to know Michael during my career in the Oireachtas, which continued after retirement.
He won the respect, and affection,
of all who were privileged to

We kept in contact all through his illness, including the day before his passing.
Rest in eternal peace Michael, and may all who grieve you're loss, be comforted, & consoled.

Having read Michael for years and shared studios with him I got to know him well through the Dublin Kerry Association. In the words of Sigerson Clifford ‘I am Kerry and proud of my name’, we find Michael’s identity. An outstanding journalist who had an instinct for politics, Michael was at home in any milieu. My deepest sympathy to Michael’s family especially his daughters of whom he was so proud
— Brigid Laffan

— Emer Connolly
Condolence to Michael's family. It is strange to read his obituary because he used to ring me in The Irish Times Library to call in the file of a political figure who had just died in order to write their obituary. We had lots of chat's and laugh's and he told me many a story which could not be repeated here. Rest Michael in the moonlight and goodnight. A true gentleman.
— Irene Stevenson
Comhbhrón ó chroí ar bháis Michael.

I was fortunate to spend 4 years sharing an office with Michael when I was a young political reporter in the Irish Times. He was always generous with his insights and wisdom. He always had a story or three. I hope he is looking down on us all now with Radio Kerry on in the background, an Irish Times in his hand, regaling stories with that booming voice and that big laugh. Rest easily, Michael. You'll be missed by many.
