Sincerest sympathies to all the O’Riordan family on the sudden death of Manus. He regularly attended our monthly lectures and, indeed, addressed us on the subject of Fr Michael O’Flanagan, the rebel priest.
I also, personally, recall with pleasure his many incisive interjections at the weekly history seminars in TCD. He could puncture an ideological opponent with clear argument though always with common courtesy.
He did not flinch from his strongly held views, a position that earns the respect of any honest opponent, I believe. Rest in peace.
— Dermot Quinn, Howth Peninsula Heritage Society

Manus was one of the most interesting people I have ever encountered in the field of Irish history. His output was remarkable on a broad range of subjects concerning Irish labour history.

Beyond his deep passion for history and commemoration, I was also fortunate over the years to spend some time in his company socially through friendship with his son Luke. One always came away with something new from any meeting with Manus. Like Luke he had a great sense of humour and enjoyed holding court.

In recent years I had great admiration for his very active retirement, and the life he and Nancy lived with such emphasis on culture and events.

He will be dearly missed. For me, the words of Bertolt Brecht are recalled, who insisted we should not fear death but rather an inadequate life. The very active life of Manus, socially and as a writer, has left an incredible legacy. The work will live on forever.
— Donal Fallon
Rest in peace comrade

Manus’s sudden death is truly shocking. A man of infinite curiosity and boundless energy, it is hard to accept that we will not see him again. Though in truth, the impact of his life will continue in many ways.
Manus was a highly valued colleague in the ITGWU and SIPTU where his well considered insights as an economist served Irish workers well in difficult times. Yet his contribution to the labour movement extended far beyond the ‘day job.’ He was also a remarkable political activist, respected labour historian and an all-round man of culture - especially in song, poetry, music and sport (Bohemians FC). In retirement he had continued to inspire many through his immersion in the ongoing work to commemorate the legacy of the International Brigades who fought to defend the Spanish Republic against fascism - a struggle that continues to resonate in many parts of the world to this day.
His energetic engagement in this work was not only a celebration of his father’s service as an International Brigadista but was also rooted in Manus’s personal philosophical commitment to the principles of equality and justice.
Manus’s passing will leave an enormous void in the lives of many people but none more than his family. We regret not being able to pay our respects in person today.

To Jess, Neil, Luke, Brenda, Nancy and all of the extended O’Riordan family, we offer our heartfelt sympathies.
Rest in power, Manus. No pasaran!

Brenda, Tony and all the O'Riordan family, that ceremony was a beautiful and fitting tribute to Manus.
He was a wonderful man, extremely talented and full of knowledge which he generously shared with all.
I loved to hear him sing, especially those lyrics he brought to life with his own compositions.
We'll really miss him.
Slán, Manus!

May Manus rest in peace, Ráth Dé ar a h-ainm, Aodhán Q, Corcaigh
— Aodhán Quinlan
The passing of Manus is an inconsolable loss for his family, his wide circle of friends, and the Left in Ireland. He gave the labour theory of value a new meaning with his indefatigable research and writing, endless activism, his international outlook, and above all, his ability to give people a hearing, not least those he disagreed with. He was as interested in the byways as the highways of history, and would turn up at the most unlikely places: meetings, conferences and get-togethers will no longer be the same without his intellect and energies.
— Luke and Dolores Gibbons
Jess, Neil, Luke and family, we are so very sorry to hear of your dads sudden and unexpected passing, Manus was always a gentleman, so very kind and always so welcoming to all. Such a huge loss for you. Thinking of you all at this very sad time xx
— Mary and Barry Murphy, Clarina, Co Limerick
We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Manus O´Riordan and all his comrades, friends and loved ones. Our movement for the memory of the International Brigades has lost a wise, intelligent, and essential voice with Manus. A truly wonderful historian and a committed activist, his work on the relevance and the legacy of the antifascist fighters for Democracy in Spain (and beyond) is priceless. He gifted us with provocative, well-informed essays and articles, and his wisdom and understanding of Irish politics will be sorely missed.

He was a relentless and proud campaigner for the Spanish Republic and the lrish volunteers in the International Brigades. Manus, you shall be missed tremendously but the work you did and the proud legacy of your parents will live on. La lucha continúa!! No Pasarán!

Thank you, Manus O'Riordan, for EVERYTHING.

May the wind be at your back for your last journey, our beloved and admired Manus O'Riordan.

On a personal level, my husband John and l are heartbroken over your sudden departure, and our son Max will remember that it was because of Manus' suggestion that we named our baby after Max Levitas.

We have shared many memorial trips and commemorations together related to the International Brigades. We shall meet again and walk over the rosemary and oregano bushes on Jarama and the Ebro.

Manus, you have just joined the glorious ranks of the brave, stubborn, and determined lrish fighters for the working class and the universal values of the Spanish Republic.

Sending our condolences to Manus´children and grandchildren, his sister Brenda, his loving partner Nancy and all his relatives, comrades, and friends.

Manus died before his time, with plenty projects in hand, writing regularly for Irish Political Review and other publications; and attending political discussions and debates, and contributing his sharp analysis. He loved life. A committed socialist, he was determined to make a difference. And he did.
— Angela Clifford
Shocked and saddened to hear Manus has died. I knew him as a historian and trade unionist over many years. We both served on the NESC many years ago. He was a hugely impressive representative for the trade union movement and the working class in that forum. Learned, forensic and with a formidable presence, when he spoke people sat up and listened. He will be sorely missed on so many levels. My condolences to his family.
