A friend of mine’s party piece used to be a piece of GAA commentary imitating Micheál O’Muircheartaigh and Micheál O’Hehir. It began with “Ar m-éirí dhom ar maidin grian an tsamhraidh ag taitneamh. Sin mar a dúirt a file fadó agus sin mar atá I bPáirc an Chrócaigh inniu.” Tá súil agam go mbeidh an ghrian ag taitneamh ar anam Micheál go deo.
— Seamus Kennelly

Sincere condolences to the O'Muircheartaigh family on the loss of Micheál. Thank you for sharing him with us. He was a wonderful man and I have such fond memories of him and the pictures he painted of the matches he commentated on. Even while watching the matches in Croke Park I loved to listen to him with my headphones on. Only Micheál could make a good story of making a ham sandwich. May he rest in peace
— a fan
My sincere sympathies to all Micheál's family on the passing of a wonderful man. I have brilliant memories of growing up in the 1980s listening to Micheál's commentary on the radio with my late father. He was my hero back then and remained so upto the present day. He was always very fair in his commentary and never criticised any player. One of my favourite lines was his description of Leitrim's famous win in the Connacht final in 1994 and I'm sure he will be (in his own words) "leaning out over the veranda of Heaven " keeping an eye on the upcoming all Ireland semi finals and finals. Hopefully the wonderful memories you all have of Micheál will be a source of comfort at this time. May he rest in peace.

RIP Micheál. Thank you for the comfort and enthusiasm your voice gave Ireland. I remember fondly the incredible facts you had on every player in the big games. You had an incredible ability to paint such a clear picture of a match and create a depth to the persona of the players, that allowed the listeners ear to ‘see’’. Your passion effused through the media channels. We are grateful and thankful to you. Wishing your family peace and good memories of you. RIP

Such deep condolences to his family and a fond farewell to a man the nation felt they knew, and he knew them. He enthralled 4 generations of my own family and kept our thought of home burning brightly while abroad. A dhéis Dé go raibh a anam dhilis
Myself and my husband weren’t long going out, home on holidays looking for a move back to these shores, we were at a match in Páirc úi Chaoimh and we met himself after the game, he asked us where we were from and commiserated with my now husband saying, seek me out if you get her to move to the marble county tis a rare thing to see a rebel in marble! He wasn’t wrong, more than a quarter century later he’s still down south and we almost have his accent trained, every time we talk of our move home we think of that day and himself
— A Cork/Kilkenny family

I had the fasinating honour of bumping into Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh in the RDS during the Special Olympics World Games of June 2003, speaking to him and his lovely daughter who always accompanied him on his busy schedules. Next on the 28th June, Derry were playing Dublin in Clones of Round 2 of the football Qualifiers, and he found the time in the middle of his usual commentary to mention my name and how he met me in the RDS earlier that week as the Clones game was in full flow. My condolences to Mícheál’s immediate and extended family. Rest in Peace🕯️

Micheál was magical. I’ll never forget listening to him being interviewed the morning of his last all-Ireland as a commentator in 2010. It was wonderful and personally melancholy at the same time as his unique voice, wit and charisma was leaving our Sunday summers. Now he has left us forever, but shall never be forgotten.

Dear Helena, Éamonn, Niamh, Aonghus, Cormac, Neasa, Nuala, Eadaoin, Doireann and all Micheal’s beloved grandchildren.

Deepest sympathies to you all on the passing of your wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was so very proud of you all and it was clear how much he loved and cherished his family throughout his life. His passing is an end of an era.

Micheal was an iconic Irish Legend that will be forever remembered for his amazing legacy to Irish culture. Ni bheidh a leithead ann aris.

I pray that God will send His Angels to comfort you all in the coming times ahead. May you all still continue to feel Micheal’s love from heaven, I believe those we love never truly leave us and bonds of love are eternal. Only gone to God and God is very near.

Suaimhneas sioraí dá anam uasail grámhar. Codladh i measc na naoimh go raibh aige anois.
— Marie Reidy, Dublin 15
Comhbhrón ó chroí leat a Niamh, agus le Helena, Éamonn, Aonghus, Cormac, Neasa, Nuala, Éadaoin agus Doireann. Agus le clann Uí Mhuircheartaigh ina iomlán. Bhí an bhrón orm a chloisint faoi Mhícheál. Cuimhní buan agam dó a fhanfaidh liom choíche. So many lovely memories of Mícheál from when we were growing up. One of my favourites is of going to the centenary celebrations of the GAA with you, Niamh, and your Dad. But there are so many more. He had a gift for storytelling, and every trip in the car appeared shorter and all the more interesting as a result. An enormous loss to muintir na hÉireann but an even greater loss to you, his family. Ag smaoineamh oraibh uilig ag an am deacair seo. Suaimhneas síoraí d'fhear uasal, lách agus cineálta. Go mbeidh leaba i measc na Naoimh aige.
— Nuala Furlong

Sympathy to all Michael’s loved ones. I was a great admirer of his and enjoyed his autobiography very much. His attitude to life was exceptional but I especially admired the way he used the Irish language, mixing it with English so that even those who are not fluent speakers could understand. Deepest sympathies to Helena and the O’Muircheartaigh family on the sad passing of Micheál.
We were fortunate to have him and you Helena to launch our club history in November 2007 in our Sports Complex.
Being the true professional that he was he had the whole book read before attending and was able to recount the various high and low points of the club journey.
He stayed around and signed numerous books on the night.
We were external grateful to him for attending our launch.
May you rest easy after all your labours on this earth, Micheál.
