Mick Molloy was my first real sporting hero. No one ever matched him in later life. Mick was modest, gentle, unassuming. He inspired by what he did and in the kindly, easy way he went about things. He was an outstanding athlete. An Olympian. Adults who I looked up to, looked up to him. Stories of his prowess and successes and hard training inspired us all. A true Galway man who succeeded on a world stage. I was sorry that I was unable to attend his funeral. My thoughts were of him. I send my sincere sympathy to his family and friends.
— Liam Moggan, formerly of Tuam Athletic Club
Modest Mick , one of Ireland's greatest athletes, has left us , enjoyed his company at our Community Games and marking the track for the young runners for many years in Corribdale. Mick was the starter for all the races ,always encouraging everybody, said little about his sporting achievements unless it was dragged out of him.Gone but will not be forgotten. Deepest sympathy to all of Mick’s family on his sad passing. Mick was an inspirational runner to my late dad Roger Rushe and dad would often tell us stories about “The great Mick Molloy”. I had the pleasure of meeting Mick after The Fields of Athenry race on St Stephens Day in 2017, when my dad introduced me to him. Dad had a great chat with Mick that day where they reminisced about their running days together. I’m sure they are back together now running laps around heaven with many of the other greats. May Mick now rest in eternal peace.
