When I first served on ASTI CEC in 2016, Miriam was one of the first to leave a deep impression. I didn't know her then but was captivated by this charismatic lady who always spoke with such eloquence, passion, spirit and who clearly had sharp intellect and vision. Over the years I got to know her better and my huge respect and admiration only deepened. She was an inspirational union president and undoubtedly, a wonderful teacher that her students would have been blessed with. She is an enormous loss, taken far too soon. My deepest sympathies to her family. Rest in peace, dear colleague.

Comhbhrón ó chroí le Jim, deartháir Miriam agus a gaolta go léir ar bhás Miriam. Is deacair cur síos iomlán a dhéanamh uirthi. Bean dathúil, álainn, séimh, flaithiúil, cairdiúil, cabhrach, cróga ab ea í. Bhí éirimiúlacht géar go smior inti. D'oibrigh go dian ar son múinteoirí i rith a cuid ama san ASTI tríd na blianta fada.
Bhí meas agus cion agam uirthi. Tá sí imithe uainn i bhfad ró luath. Tá folús fágtha ina diaidh. Gan dabht ar bith, ní bheidh a leithéid inár measc arís. Mothóimid uainn í. Tá sí 'mithe ar shlí na fírinne. Go raibh leaba aici i measc na Naomh.

As neighbours and friends for a lifetime, with shared memories across six decades, we were deeply saddened to hear of the untimely death of Miriam.

So many achievements, with ambitions and dreams yet to be fulfilled, by this very talented woman of considerable intellect.

Her care of Kitty, and her beloved Desmond was exemplary and unstinting. That she faced the challenge of this illness on top of her still evident grieving for Desmond was particularly harsh.

Miriam gave her heart, her whole heart, to her projects, her concerns, and to those whose lives she touched. And always with warmth and a welcome in her home, (and her glorious garden), witness to many a great ‘debate’, laughter and tears, the flick of the hair and that piercing gaze - all will be with us for a long time.

My sincere condolences to Jim and Carol, her Fennell family, the wider Duggan family, and her wonderful and very valued neighbours, she will be sorely missed.

Rest in Peace dearest Mir,
Jane Lazenby Ferris
and the Lazenby family
