Niall was a friend and a colleague in a wild adventure. He restored the Tower and I had the privilege to become webmaster to this immensely important national and European project. I will miss him. Sympathies to his family and partner Maria.
— Pól Ó Duibhir
Have been trying to contact Niall since we had been away and without success. Only found out today after persistant phoning. Such a shock. I will miss him as we spent lots of time together during his development of Tower 7. He was a friend whom I will never forget. A jewel of a man and his family will miss him terribly. Our prayers for them all.

Sleep tight my friend. We always enjoyed your very generous hospitality on Bloomsday and the occasional glass at the Grapevine in Dalkey. You also added a dimension to our understanding JJ. That scholarship will outlive us all.

The day was much better from having met with you.

Warm regards to all the family. Brían.

Deepest sympathy to all of Niall’s family on his untimely death, RIP. Niall gave me life saving lessons in Heywood around 1961 for which I received an Irish Red Cross certificate. We have been in contact occasionally since then. We were always delighted and proud to receive his invitation to one of his Bloomsday celebrations in his beautifully restored Martello Tower. Ann has good memories of working with Sheila in the Northern and Employers a long time ago. Deepest sympathy to all on the loss of a great man.

I have happy memories of expeditions to Dalkey Island in our rowing boat and gaining access to the Martello tower on Dalkey Island which in the past was open prior to being sealed up. Then a few years ago I hear of a man who was renovating the Martello tower in Killiney. On passing the tower one day I wandered in and met this extraordinary man Niall O'Donoghue. Research and dedication to the project was not only entertaining but a valuable resource and record of these historical towers. Niall has made a great contribution and legacy. R.I.P.
— Ronan Beirne
I am so very sorry to hear that Niall has died. My sincere condolences to his family.
— Orla O'Callaghan
Very sad to hear of Niall's passing and to watch his funeral online. A man of unique vision, fascinating too. They say that the only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys and boy didn't he have the best and biggest toys! The firing of his canon was a delight to watch and a very great privilege to witness. I only just hope that the Russians don't realise that Irelands only shore to ship battery is temporarily out of commission and that the island is now defenceless. May he rest in peace having left such an important heritage behind along with his family.
— Carl Convery
We are saddened to hear of Niall's passing.
We appreciate the time Niall took to welcome us to Killiney when we arrived 18 months ago. He shared his knowledge on the history of Killiney with us and we especially appreciate his thoughtfulness in sharing maps and correspondence he had come across relating to Abbey Lea, residence of the Australian Ambassador. The restoration of the property will be better for his helpfulness and insights. We will miss him. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
— Gary Gray Australian Ambassador & Pippa

Our deepest condolences to Alison, Sovay, Emma and Philip and all of Niall’s family. We first met Niall when Alison and I were students together at TCD in the 60’s and saw him regularly over the years. Sadly we lost touch when we moved to France 14 years ago.

We will always remember him as a unique character with great strength of will; generous, funny and sometimes infuriating - but that’s how friends are.

May he rest in peace and be remembered as someone who left his mark on the world and a real contribution to his country.
— Elizabeth and Eamon Martin - Carhaix-Plouguer, France
Dear Philip and all the family,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad, Niall. He and I spoke many times about cats and how his cat sat in the passenger seat of his car when he drove in to Dublin to collect rent from commercial properties he owned. A great man with many stories snd tales.
Remember him fondly in On the Grapevine Dalkey

My sincere condolences to the O'Donoghue family & to his partner Maria on the passing of Niall. I took Maths lessons with Niall back in 1987 and he was great help in getting me through my exam. We would always see him around Killiney cycling up to the beach with his dog. He died what he loved doing and he will be greatly missed by all whom knew him. I only recently chatted with him after swimming down the beach and you were just a better person after being in his company. May he rest in everlasting peace.

My sincere condolences to the family. Niall was a man of great vision and energy and his commitment to the restoration of the Martello Tower at Killiney an exemplary example of the sympathetic restoration of a historic monument. His commitment even extended to the replacement of the original cannon on the roof of the tower with a full size replica, which he did me the honour of manufacturing on his behalf. I was also very proud to fire the gun on the occasion of the completion/opening of the Tower (much to the annoyance of his well healed neighbours in the vicinity!) Well do I remember the dramatic police escort which accompanied the delivery of the gun-powder to the Tower on the occasion. RIP Niall, you were an extraordinary man.

So sad to hear that Niall has passed away. He will be very much missed locally. His contributions to the local knowledge of the area are very relevant to all. Niall would always stop for a friendly and informative chat. His swimming activities on Killiney Beach made him very popular. Niall's Martello Tower will remain a source of knowledge because of his enterprise, skills, dedication and hard work.
