I would like to express my condolences to the Cooney family on the recent death of their mother, Nora. The Cooney family hold a special place in the hearts of GAA followers all over Ireland. It has been my special privilege to know Joe and his wife Catherine (nee Mannion) over the years and to have been in Croke Park in 1987 and 1988 cheering on Galway when they won their two in a row All Ireland senior hurling finals. The Mayo GAA fraternity joins with me in extending sympathy to all the Cooney family at this sad time. Ye are special people here in the province and Nora was clearly an amazing lady from a wonderful generation of rural Irish people. May her egentle soul rest in peace.
