I only recently learned the sad news that Oliver had passed away. Oliver was a lovely person, hugely popular and a real gentleman. He was most helpful to me when I was researching old cinemas and kindly supplied me with photographs of cinema staff to use in my Dublin and Irish Cinemas books. Oliver got Pullman seats for me and my grandfather Thomas Allen, at the Astor for "With a Song in My Heart". Every time we were in Dublin or he was in London there would be free entrance to picture houses. Oliver was kind, and one of a kind, he brought us food from Sandymount to Walkinstown in the late 50's when times were hard.
In England in the 60's he carried our first television from the shop to our house, about a mile!
He had such cool sideburns in the 1970's.
I'm sure St Peter will be saying "Don't worry Ollie, we've sorted out a Pullman Seat,
"We're playing 'Song in my Heart'"

I was truly saddened upon hearing about the death of my Uncle Oliver. I’ll always cherish the adventures I had with him when I was growing up. Trips to the Astor when we would visit Dublin and then after, him stopping buses mid-route to send us on our way home. I was always in awe of his power over Dublin’s bus service. Even though it has been a few years since the last time I saw him, I can still hear his warm and joyous laugh. I will miss him greatly. Sending all my love to Mary, Pádraig, Ollie and Roseanna.

To Mary Oliver and family
Such sad news on the passing of Ollie. I was so privileged to have worked with Ollie in the Astor Cinema. He was also a great friend of my late dad Larry Murtagh formally of Daly's pub on Eden Quay. I can still see him smiling and hearing him whistle as he went around the front hall making sure everyone was happy.
I have no doubt there will be a huge welcome for him when he meets up with all his old friends from the Astor. Safe journey Ollie.
Keeping you all in my prayers.

On my own behalf as well as on behalf of all in St John Ambulance, I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the Allen family on the passing of Ollie Snr. While I did not personally know Ollie Snr, if, in any way, his children's dedication to St. John reflects their late father's dedication, determination and sense of duty, allied with a great empathy for their fellow human beings at time of illness or suffering, then Ollie Snr. should be proud of this part of his legacy. RIP.
