Deepest sympathy to all the Family. As a Cdr., he was the very best of the best! a pleasure to work for and talk with. He once tricked me with the 'old marble in the coffee cup...'!

The port and starboard cannons will miss him, as indeed, we all will...

Pat was on my interview board when I applied for a commission in the Navy almost 50 years ago. I don't remember who else was on the board. That fact says it all.
I subsequently worked with Pat in many different circumstances. I found him to be tough, honest and extremely diligent. He didn't suffer fools gladly. Once the work was done he became an extremely likeable companion with a wicked sense of humour. He will be missed.

Sincere condolences to the O'Mahony family on the death of Pat. I served with him, as a junior officer, in Naval HQ in Dublin in the early nineties and suffice to say, there were a lot of laughs. He came with a fearsome reputation but I never saw from where that emanated. He was a very dedicated, helpful and loyal officer to the Naval Service with a wonderful sense of humour. May he rest in peace.
— Cdr Ret'd Martin McGrath
I was very saddened to learn of Pat's departure from our world. He was a powerful and commanding leader, who was fair with people. He played a very important role in the first few decades of our developing Navy, in good times and in the lean times. Every time I see red ink on paper, I think of him, he had a great sense of fun and humour and of course loved his rugby. Always well dressed and dapper looking, as he smoked his hand rolled cigarettes. I was very pleased for him when he correctly and justifiably received his Commendation.

Fair winds and calm seas, duty done - RIP

One of the truly great and brave characters of the first 50 years of the NS has slipped and sailed on his final voyage and left a sea of memories behind him. He gave positive colour, identity and direction to the emerging NS throughout his long career. He was intensely loyal to the NS, focussed, direct, dogged in everything, he sailed a straight line and demanded the same from everyone. He wore his heart on his sleeve. He demanded respect in its many guises and got it. Consistent and fair I worked with him for 2 years in NHQ Dublin, he was strong mentor. A tough facade but I suspect with a well hidden softer and kind heart. I had and still have much respect for him. It is therefore entirely appropriate to say of Cdr O’Mahony, Ni beidh a leitheid aris ann. Fair winds and calm seas. Thank you.

‘We laugh best with those we love’

I knew Pat for nearly 40 years and it was an honour and privilege to have known him.
He was a wonderful Naval Service Officer, a gentleman to his fingertips, a great historian and a proud, loyal Kerryman.
Above all else - he was a fun loving character.
Rest in Peace, dear friend.

My sincere sympathies to the O Mahony family on the passing of Pat. I worked with him for many years in NHQ. He was a larger than life character, both feared and respected. Pat was a very dedicated, hard working and principled person. He though me many things - I can still see the red biro comments - all fair, concise and helpful. He had exacting standards which he himself maintained. May he rest in peace.

Our sincere deepest sympathy to Shane, Fiona, Sinéad & Deirdre, also Anne, Donal and extended family including John and Angela, Des and Breda. We have fond memories of him visiting Cockleshell and the great stories and yarns he told. We always knew his letters and cards by the beautiful hand writing and we were always addressed in Irish. He never failed to send a card without a prize bond enclosed. Rest easy in your New home as you would call it the Empire in the sky with your family and friends gone before you. May your gentle soul rest in peace.
