It was with shock and much regret that the news of Pádraig's sudden and untimely passing was received on the Sheep's Head peninsula in West Cork. We warmly recall the lovely spring day of March 1st, 2007 when he, accompanied by Michael Berkery and Gerry Gunning, travelled the long distance here to Kilcrohane and brought Minister Eamon O'Cuív and his officials to meet the local people and walk parts of the Sheep;s Head Way walking trail. The Committee had been lobbying for almost a decade, without success, to get recognition for farmers and landowners who had allowed public access to their land. Pádraig's efforts resulted in the introduction of the Walk's Scheme within 12 months and he returned to officially launch the scheme in August 2008. It has benefitted many people in various parts of the country ever since. This, of course, was but one example of the many ways in which he worked for farmers and rural people. Sincere sympathy to Ella, Julieanne, Catherine, Elma, Patrick and all the family on your great loss.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of Padraig. In 2009, Padraig visited projects and communities working with Self Help Africa in Kenya and was a great supporter of our work. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.

I met Pàdraig in the Farm Centre at the Launch of the very successful Study Guides in conjunction with Irish Farmers Journal/ Agri Aware/ Irish Agricultural Science Teachers Association (IASTA), in 2006 by the then Minister for Education Ms. Mary Hannafin T.D.
Pàdraig was always interested in the importance of Science in Agricultural Education.
