So sorry to hear of Pats passing .
A great flute player for as long as I can remember. RIP

A text message early Thursday morning brought me the sad news of the death of Pat Mahon. A nostalgic day for me tinged with sorrow. Echoes of happier times coming whisperiing back to me. Will a Mayo Fleadh ever be the same again? We music lovers have so many memories of Pat over the years. His unmistakable face in the crowd. His leather cap, his beard and his unique style played with such gusto. A great street entertainer. Round him we gathered sitting on the window sill captivated by the man and his music. I have a treasured video of him from a fleadh in Riverstown. I put the price of a pint into his pocket and asked him to do me a favour "will you please sing the Rocks of Bawn ". I had a new camcorder and feared he might be intimidated by being taped. He gave me a stern look and soon after raised the flute in acknowledgement of my request.I called for silence and a hush came over the crowded bar. He introduced the song with a verse played on the flute laced with ornamentation and then we had the Pat Mahon version of the Rocks of Bawn like no other..God it was so beautiful..He finished with two rousing reels. Every Christmas I rewind the tape . Its as if he was a guest in our house. Pat a fond farewell. I have shed a tear for you . Thank you for the music and the memories. Your video now more poignant and cherished than ever..To all his family my sincere sympathy. His vibrant music will live on in the treasure chest of our hearts. May the light of heaven be his reward.

So very sad to hear of the sudden death of Pat . He was such a lovely gentleman , , gifted Flute player & beautiful singer ..Deepest sympathies to the Mahon family & friends ..Treasured memories of West Sligo & meeting Pat at many musical events in the Region . . Treasured memories of Pat in Gurteen and Tubercurry over the years. What a talented flute player and singer, I recall him singing "Belfast Town" to perfection. He asked me to mind his flute one day in Tubercurry, what a pleasure it was to play a tune on it.
