My deepest sympathy to you Breda, Grace and all the family on your great loss. I have such warm memories of you both in Saudi Arabia. Pat was a very caring and kind gentleman and a model teacher, who was totally dedicated and hardworking. You were so humble, that despite our many chats, I hadn't known that he won the Bonn Vere Foster until I read it here. He did not waste his talents nor boast and many were influenced by his great values. Pat made the world a better place. May his reward be great in Heaven.
Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal dílis agus leaba chompordach i measc na naomh go raibh aige.
Go gcumhdaí Dia sibh.

It was with great sadness that I heard belatedly of Pat’s unexpected passing. My sincere sympathies to Breda and family. We were classmates in CBS Secondary School Midleton in the 60s. I recall my annual visits to Shanagarry NS encouraging students to enroll in our Alma Mater. Pat always welcomed me with a smile. I remember his school and classroom as a happy place where children grew in every sense of the word. The very many condolences in this book are eloquent testimony to a life well lived in a community he loved and which loved him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

My heartfelt condolences to Grace and Breda (whom I always knew and adored, as so many other kids did, as ‘Miss Walsh’). Mr O’Keeffe taught me in Shanagarry National School in the 80’s. I am very grateful to him for the start he gave my education. He was so encouraging of art and drama and music and learning. He asked me to do my best. I have a strong memory of him drinking out of one of the tiny glass milk bottles that used to be delivered for the children. Sipping away with a ciggie in his hand at lunchtime and laughing indulgently at some squabble or other that broke out in the playground. His voice and laugh were so distinctive and are fond memories I have. He lived by what he taught. He did his very best to give us a good start in life. A moral and kind man who I only now realise had been caring for his wife for years. Rest in peace, Sir. You are a gentleman and I thank you very much. Strength and peace to you Miss Walsh and Grace. And to all your extended family on this premature and cruel loss.
— Doireann Hurley (Shanagarry)
