Our deepest sympathy to Ellen and all the McGarty family on the death of Packie. May he forever rest in peace. Packie, was more than just a good footballer. He was a gentleman and an example to the way we should lived our lives. We as two disabled people were well acquainted with meeting Packie. He would rush towards us with friendship and hospitality. On receiving a trophy at one of those meetings, he said: "I don't deserve this trophy. I may have been good at what I love doing, (playing football). But there are disabled people here who did not ask for what they have got, but accepted their circumstances much better than I ever could."
Sleep Peaceful, Packie.Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal.

Dear Aunty Ella, we offer you our heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your beloved husband. Uncle Packie was such a kind uncle and gran uncle. I loved our stop offs in Clondalkin on match days in the 80s. And in recent years Eleanor and I loved cycling down to see you both in Terenure. Uncle Packie would always find some sweets in a drawer or send you out to the freezer for an ice cream. Lucky Eleanor!
To Christine, Jean, Pádraig, Michael, Mary, Aileen and Eamon, we are so sorry you've lost your wonderful dad.
To all the grandchildren, Uncle Packie always spoke with such love and pride about you, on every visit.
Reading the messages of sympathy and love, it's remarkable how many lives Uncle Packie touched with his footballing skills and his kindness.
I will always remember his interest and enthusiasm in every conversation...regardless of the team or the sport or whether it was yesterday's game or a match from long ago. Rest in peace Uncle Packie xx

No words about Packy can do justice to the man.
He will be remembered as footballer of extraordinary skill, but far more important as a unique human being who was loyal , intensely proud of the place he came from ,who saw the good in everybody , but totally devoid of any ego . He was a remarkable man.

Knowing Packy and the great faith he had, I will pray for him , for his adored Ella ,his children and grandchildren and whenever I happen to be in a church, will light a candle for him and his family. In his lifetime he lit up Leitrim people’s lives in the 1950’s and 1960's with his performances on the football field and the lives of everyone he ever met off the field..

May the great Packy McGarty rest in peace.

With deepest sympathy to Ella, and the McGarty family

I would like to convey my heartfelt sympathy to Packie’s spouse, Ellen and to all the McGarty family on your sad loss.
Packie was my childhood idol when I watched his brilliant displays on the football field against Galway in the Connaught Finals in the 1950’s and 1960. And years later I was amazed to be treated as an equal when I unexpectedly found myself sharing the backseat with him on a number of occasions in “the Dublin car” when we travelled down from Dublin to play for Leitrim in National League matches in the late 60’s and early 70’s.
What a wonderful man he was and a modest genius. May he enjoy his eternal reward.
