Sad to hear about Philip's passing. A strong chessplayer with lots of native talent and with a great sense
of humour.

My condolences to his family and friends.
— John Griffin
Very sad to learn of Philips death. He was a work colleague in Cork and later in Galway. In later years I had lost contact with Philip but have fond memories of him when we worked together. My deepest sympathy to his wife, daughters and all the families on this sad loss.

All of us in the Irish chess community are devastated to hear the very sad news of Philip’s passing. He was an absolute gentleman, very kind , always in good form and one of the greatest players Ireland has ever produced. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
— Kieran Moynihan
Philip was as nice a person as anyone could meet, always friendly and good humoured. I first met him in 1977 at the Kilkenny chess tournament and we were friends ever since. Such a charismatic larger than life character, it is hard to believe that he is gone.Everyone who knew him will miss him.
— Peter Cafolla
Knew Philip as part of the Irish Chess community. Had the privilege to play him twice in recent years. A gentleman both on and off the board.
Sympathies to Steve and the rest of Philips family.
— Martin O’Grady
