Deepest sympathy to Mrs O'Keeffe and family on the sad death of Professor Michael. When as a patient, one sat behind the slit lamp, you knew you were his most important patient, the old adage of having a days work done by lunchtime cut no ice with Mr O'Keeffe, he would have it done by 10 am. Sadly he didn't get the chance to enjoy a well earned retirement.
Rest easy Mr O'Keeffe.

I wish to express my sincerest sympathy to Professor O’Keffe’s wife and family on the loss of their dear husband and father. Professor OKeffee treated me when I had eye laser treatment to both eyes. I have met many, many Doctors over the years and I can honestly say he stood out as being the kindest, most approachable that I have met. Many times I had my reviews at 7am in the Mater private and he was always there even turning on the lights at times. He always reassured and chatted remembering things going on in my life. He will be so missed but God had a plan to take him from this world early. God rest you Prof and thank you for the miracles you performed everyday you went to work.
— Caroline Bailey

Thank you, Professor O’Keeffe, for your irreplaceable care. Rest in peace

We were heartbroken to learn of the death of Prof O Keeffe. Our daughter Carol was a premature baby born in 1991 and Mr O Keeffe looked after her since then. She attended Temple Street Children's hospital then went on to the Mater Private and then to Clane. He had a great interest in her achievements from starting school to starting out in her career. He always had time for a chat no matter how busy he was. We will miss him very much. We wish to send our sincere sympathy to his wife and all his family. We also send our sympathy to Bernie who has always been there by his side. Thinking also about his other colleagues who will miss him dearly.

Our daughter began attending Prof O’Keeffe when she was 20 months old and we had many visits over the years. He was an absolute gentleman, so kind in dealing with her, and us, from a toddler to adulthood. He loved having a chat about sport and I was always amazed that he remembered connections despite the vast number of patients he saw. He made time for people and had a genuine interest in them. He invited our daughter to do work experience with him in Transition Year and she is now studying Medicine, he continued to inspire. Our sincere condolences to all of his family, your loss is immense, but we do hope you are gaining some comfort from the legacy he left to so many and the difference he made in countless lives. May he rest peacefully.

My sincere condolences to the O Keefe family on the passing of Professor O Keefe. He first treated me over 35 years ago and then looked after my preterm baby for over 16 years. He was a dedicated professional who was so warm and engaging. I remember many days where he arrived in Holles st at 6.30 am , before he headed to the Mater. I last met him in 2019 in the Mater Private and even then he was referring me further even though he was responsible for giving me so much already. He was a visionary and a passionate doctor. How lucky so many were to encounter his care. As a family thank you for the gift of your husband and father as I have no doubt he couldn’t have given so much without the bedrock of family behind him. We truly will not see his like again. Prof rest in peace.

Sincere Sympathy to the O'Keeffe family on the passing of Prof O'Keeffe.

I would like to say that the life of my daughter Catherine would be very different today had it not been for Prof O'Keeffe. My daughter was born with Glaucoma, a condition I thought only older people got. By the time Prof O'Keefe saw Catherine, she was 3 & a half months old, she was already going blind. He told me he would have to operate the next morning as it was so serious. Catherine is now 17yrs old, in 5th year and a Black Belt in Taekwondo. I will be forever grateful to Prof O'Keefe for the care he and his team gave Catherine. I am sorry to never have a consultation with Prof O'Keeffe again. May he rest in peace.

I wish to convey my sincere sympathies to Professor O’Keeffe’s bereaved family and friends on their great loss.

I am yet another grateful former patient of Professor O’Keeffe. I was one of the early LASIK patients. Professor O’Keeffe’s care and attention for me (including follow-up) were exemplary. When, in more recent times, we recalled my experience, he described my treatment as ‘frontier stuff’ …. I’m glad I didn’t know that then!!

I admired the professionalism, efficiency and kindness with which Michael ( ably assisted by his trusted secretary at the time - Maura) ran the laser clinic in the Mater Private so much. It was the epitome of the elusive well oiled machine. Everything ran on time.

Professor O’Keeffe left a lasting impression on me. His interpersonal skills, the importance of taking time with people (without dawdling), a kind word of reassurance, a gentle smile, how it is possible to be efficient without being brusque were very special indeed. These are all qualities I have tried to bring into my own day to day dealings with people.

Every time I attended Michael he was surrounded by students, he was mentoring /supervising the next generation of consultants. It is wonderful to know that the work he pioneered ( the ‘frontier stuff’) will carry on.
