Our sincere condolences to the Nyland family and the Salesian Community on the sad passing of Fr P J, a kind & a very helpful gentleman, May he rest in peace.
— Michael and Joan Fagan , Warrenstown , Co Meath
I was very sorry to hear about PJ's passing and I wish to express my sincere sympathy to his family and his Salesian confrères. I have known PJ since the 1970s as a friend, a fellow student, and a work colleague. Although we followed different life journeys, PJ always stayed in touch and visited when he was in the locality. PJ was a true Salesian with a generous spirit and a genuine interest in people who reached out to everyone and lived by the words of Saint Francis de Sales that 'A spoon full of honey catches more flies than a barrel full of vinegar.'

Our deepest condolences to the Nyland family on the loss of our dear friend, colleague and chaplain Fr PJ. He has had a huge impact on the lives of so many people in the school, he was a champion of the Arts and sports particularly sharing with us his love of GAA and Mayo of course. He never missed an opportunity to praise, to comfort and to acknowledge others while always remaining humble about the huge impact he was having on those around him. We are forever grateful to have called you our friend, to have leaned on you for support, to have celebrated the good times together and to have enjoyed your special laugh. Rest in peace.
— Paola Flynn
Sincere condolences to the Nyland family. Fr P.J. will be a huge loss to the students at Ratoath college. He always loved to talk about Mayo football at the parent teacher meetings. ..... which was always very welcoming . May he rest in peace .
Grace, Rory and the McGrath family . Students at Ratoath College.
— Grace&Rory McGrath
Sincere condolences to the Nyland family. The tribute and ceremony you gave PJ was beautifully personal and inclusive- just as PJ was. He spoke fondly of you all and looked forward to every chance of getting home. We often chatted about our big families - and bottom line always came down to big love.

Deepest sympathy also to the Salesian Community and PJs friends.

PJ was always busy, yet always took the time to touch base. He was a great friend and support to me personally and professionally and had an artful way of getting you to open up.

PJ will be sorely missed in Ratoath college. I will miss him - from the welcome back hug, to lunchtime chats, prayer room plans to graduation, laughs on the corridor to team teaching. He was a cornerstone of Rataoth and will be missed by all.

He loved to tell the parable of talents to incoming 1st years to encourage them to try. When he arrives to the Lord he will have so much to show - he worked hard and clearly had a massive impact on so many.
— Caitriona Smith
I was quite shocked when I heard of Father PJ’s death. I knew him only in the context of confession. Before the pandemic he used to come to St Columban’s, Dalgan Park, on the afternoon of First Fridays to be available for the priests’ confessions. I found him to be a kindly, understanding confessor, one who always left me joyfully grateful for God’s mercy in the sacrament.

My deepest sympathy to his family and to his Salesian confreres. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam uasal.

The entire school community in Pallaskenry sends our prayers to Fr. PJ's family and religious community. Fr. PJ's footprint on our school's history, both as teacher and Principal, was immense. His gentle and unfailing kindness to all remains a constant reminder of Don Bosco's message. Never without a mention whenever we reminisce about past sporting highlights, Fr. PJ remains an example for students, staff and mentors here in Pallaskenry. Cheerful, interested, compassionate, thoughtful and a wonderful listener, finding joy in other people's happiness and providing a supporting arm in times of sadness, he is a great loss. P.J. has been in my life since I was 12 years old, some years up to 12 classes a week! I used see more of him than my parents! We could be in English class and he'd pull out photos of his new nieces and nephews and show them off with pride. He would treat us as equals not kids. We all knew we could trust him and turn to him if needed.
That foundation lead to a 34 year friendship of which I am now heartbroken has come to an end.
When school ended P.J. married me and christened my boys. We would talk as often as our lives permitted and I always counted him as one of my good friends. If we didn't see each other in over a year it never mattered we would just pick up where we left off. He could always guarantee a text of condolence from me after an All Ireland but he generally wouldn't get back, sore at another loss....
All that said I'm a little surprised at just how heartbroken I am today and can't imagine how lost his family, both Nyland and Salesian must feel without him. My love to you all at this sad time.
Sleep well my friend.....
— Vicky Murphy, Seamus Curtin & Boys

My sincerest sympathies to all of PJ's family. I worked with him in Ratoath since 2007 and he has always been there for all of us, in good times and in bad. He helped so many students and staff over the years and his kind and caring nature will never be forgotten. He was one of the lads there, which he enjoyed and he was up for a bit of craic too, in the staff room or on nights out. His smile and his chuckle will be sorely missed. My Mam is from Mayo so we always had a bit of banter and he was a supporter of our trad group in school. His promotion of Gaeilge, particularly during Seachtain na Gaeilge each year was fantastic, we had him out dancing during the céilí mór several years, he was always willing to get involved.
His funeral mass was really lovely, he always spoke so highly of you all and you really did him proud today. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this very sad time.
Rest in peace PJ, ba mhór an onóir dom é bheith ag obair leat.

It is with a heavy heart that I say farewell to PJ. We worked closely together in Copsewood (Pallaskenry) and in Heywood (Ballinakill). He was 100% Mayo. I was a Dub! But we had lots in common. He loved to reach out and connect with everyone in that reassuring way of his. When he asked how you were, he meant it.

We had a few concerts lined up to attend 'when all this is over' but they must wait.
PJ the journey seems a little longer now without you around. But thanks for your loyal friendship. I will miss that. My deepest sympathy to your close and extended family.
— Hugh O'Donnell

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends, his Salesian community and to his friends and colleagues in Ratoath Communty College.

Condolences to the Nyland family, Fr PJ’s family and friends, and the Salesian Community.
I built a great relationship with Fr PJ in our nine years working together in Ratoath College. In more recent years I worked closely with PJ in the Guidance department. PJ had empathy and understanding that I don’t believe I had seen before. He believed in our young people. He cared so deeply and gave up so much time to looking after and ensuring that our students felt valued and safe. Not only did PJ embody the ‘mol an óige’ ethos but he cared about the staff, the school and the community. I know how much he missed it last in the last year. I learned a lot from PJ, both personally and professionally. I will miss the craic and camaraderie in the staff room, particularly the chats over breakfast and lunch. Hoping you are free from pain now PJ, rest in peace.
— Charlotte Grogan
