Sincere sympathies to Enda's family and friends on the passing of a wonderful man who enriched all our lives. John Bowman's programmes captured his thirst for justice, his unassuming manner, his deep kindness, and his wry sense of humour. The last time we met, shortly after he moved into Roebuck, he led a lively discussion on climate change. We remember so many family occasions where Enda presided - weddings, christenings and sadly funerals, but also his good fellowship around the table in Mayo, Maynooth, Dublin and France, and attending Mass in his Mayo gate lodge where the bread and wine was followed by a feast of lemonade and Pringles he had carefully laid in for the children. As Dubs, we've all been rooting for Mayo to win the all Ireland while Enda was around to savour it, but alas no. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. John and Eithne Fitzgerald

Condolences to Fr Enda's family and friends. A towering yet gentle figure of leadership in Catholic and Christian Ireland, for over half a century, when such leadership was hungered for. I had the privilege of being at his lectures and talks on many occasions and his understanding and humility shone through in all he said as well as his obvious erudition. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aige.

May I offer my sincere sympathy to Gerard and all the family. It is often said that ‘behind every good man is a good woman’ Your mother (Mrs Mc) took my mother Kathleen ( eldest of ten) under her wing having spotted her love of learning in National school. She tutered her through secondary education from your home in Bekan in the afternoons. So the story goes on... Compassion, a treasured gift. RIP

I had the privilege and the joy of knowing and being known by Enda for as long as I can remember. He was a truly remarkable person, uniting rare intellectual gifts and a thirst for justice with a gentleness, warmth and lightness of spirit that made them all the more compelling. He will be dearly missed by the many who counted themselves among his friends, and who will continue to look to him for inspiration in the years to come.

Deepest sympathy to Dr. Gerard his family and extended McDonagh family on the sad death of Fr Enda. I have fond memories of Fr. Enda, when on his visits to Longford he would come to the convent at the hospital to say mass always accompanied by Dr. Gerard and the late Anne. After mass we would sit around, have the cup of tea, the conversation would be varied and he loved a laugh, always so relaxed and easy, such a gentleman. Remembering you very specially at this very difficult time. May Fr Enda’s gentle soul rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to Enda's family on their great loss. I was a student in Enda's First Divinity class in Moral Theology in 1961-2 and we learned plenty. More importantly for me were his many books on Moral which i read and which threw great light on the subject as I tried to teach it some years later in the seminary in Wexford. He was perhaps our greatest moral theologian in the post-Vatican 2 years and we all owe him a great deal. May his noble soul rest in God's peace.
— Fr Bill Cosgrave, Ferns Diocese

It is sad news that Enda has died. He was Ireland’s most distinguished theologian and a warm and generous person who contributed so much to Irish life and society in his time. He will be missed not only by his close family relations but also by a very wide circle of friends. And missed, too, by all who valued his courage in speaking out on issues of public concern in Ireland.

To all the McDonagh family, I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Rev. Professor Enda, may he rest in peace. So many of us were enriched by his knowledge, and wisdom. He made an enormous contribution to the intellectual life of the Catholic Church and to the wider society during his lifetime. He was very proud of his western roots and anytime I met him he was always in good humour. As well as being a theologian of distinction, he also had a great interest in modern scientific developments and how these could assist with feeding a growing world population and alleviating poverty. He had a deep rooted desire to help mankind and he will be greatly missed. Thinking of you all at this sad and difficult time. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh ag an Ollamh iontach agus gaelach seo.

Comhbhrón ó chroí libh.

It was with great sadness we learned of the death of the wonderful Fr Enda this week.

As a family we were blessed to know Enda thanks to his more than fifty year friendship with our parents, the late Paddy and Dorothy Kilroy. A regular visitor to our family home, often with his great friend Fr Ronan Drury, it was always a pleasure and a joy to share his excellent and generous company. In good times and bad Enda always listened, always showed compassion and always had a wise word. May his kind and gentle soul rest in peace.
— Aisling, Stephen, Helen & Cliona Kilroy and Families

I had the great pleasure of working with Enda in Trocaire many years ago and of holidaying with him in France more recently. His company at work or over dinner was a rare gift. His courtesy, humour, wit, encyclopedic knowledge and boundless curiosity were gifts to all who knew him. His unfailing kindness, optimism, enthusiasm, and eagerness to chart humane responses to emerging challenges were an example to us all. So sad to “attend” his funeral remotely but thinking of him so warmly today.
— Mary Sutton

Our deepest sympathies to Gerald and all the McDonaghs. He was a wonderful intellect, full of compassion. One wonders where the Catholic Church might be today if he had been listened to. He was always welcoming to the wider family, inviting us to share time with him in Maynooth. He was the image of the Church Compassionate. I can only imagine the robust discussions he is now having with my father up above! His death marks the end of an era both for the Church in Ireland and the world, but also for the family.
