God bless and console his great soul. He informed us.
— A Kerry Reader
Sincere condolences to Robert's wife, family friends and colleagues.
I first met Robert on a flight from Damascus to Cairo in 1976 and have been in frequent contact with him in the Middle East and Ireland ever since
Robert always strove to give the facts: meticulous in his research and fearless in his reporting. Always generous with his time he gave invaluable insights and assistance to so many Irish peacekeepers down the years. What an inspiration, what a loss.
Rest in peace Bob.

At the end of the documentary ‘This is not a Movie’ Robert Fisk says, “If we journalists can do anything, it is to write the story of what we see and witness with our own eyes, to leave a direct and emotional record for people who are not yet alive, so that no-one can say this didn’t happen. No-one can say we didn’t know; no-one told us“.

This is one of those very rare occasions when, without hyperbole, it is true to say the world is all the poorer for his passing. He will be missed by those seeking to understand events in their historical context, by those looking for the truth, and by those who respected the eloquence and moral courage of a brave and dedicated journalist.
— Martin Rubenstein
An inspiration to those of us who had the privilege of working with him in the many conflict zones. He set the very high standards expected of journalists in this line of work, often risking his own life so that the true story was recorded. I wish to offer my sympathies to Lara Marlowe also. Rest in peace.
— Eamonn Smyth
So saddened to hear of his death, loved to listen to him on the radio with Pat. He was what a journalist should be.
— A listener
What a huge loss to the world of honest journalism. Robert always emphasised the historical causes of current conflicts around the world which always came back to colonialism and imperialism. His clear, forensic articles and lectures on the Sykes-Picot deal, which cynically carved up the Middle East over one hundred years ago , are brilliant in understanding the history of the region. He has given a great service to humanity. Robert knew that if you were being feted by the wealthy and powerful then you were not doing your job.
May he rest in peace.
— Roscommon reader
Sincere condolences to Robert's family and many friends. A truly passionate and courageous reporter who provide a unique insight into global conflicts especially across the Middle East. Fond memories of his many visits to IRISHBATT in SOUTH LEBANON. Robert you were never afraid to call it as you saw it on the ground. "Pity the Nation" at your untimely passing . RIP

SUAINEAS SIORAÍ ROBERT.
— MdeFaoite
Very saddened to hear of the death of Robert Fisk. A truly passionate journalist who put his life on the line many times in his career. I didn't have much interest in Middle Eastern conflicts, however, once I heard he was a "guest" on a radio or tv programme I would stop what I was doing and LISTEN. I always felt he gave unbiased reporting. Pity he's gone at a relatively young age and had so much more left in him. May he rest in peace.
— Aine McNamara

— Ciaran Crowe
My sincere sympathy to Robert’s wife and family, his many friends and journalistic colleagues, especially Lara at this time,
Robert Fisk was a truly dedicated and accomplices journalist, whose keen observations and insights in his journalistic belief a sharp intelligence and judgement in the formulation of his opinion after his assessment of corroborated facts collected from primary sources on the ground.
I.too .recall his reporting of t he massacres in the Sa Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon asone of the most impactful and pieces of newspaper journalism I have ever read.
It simply indicates the standard of journalism he often attained during his long and distinguished career.

“Ni bheadh a leitheadai aris ann“, as the Irish say when a person of exceptional ability passes on.
His newly created absence leaves a void which may never be adequately filled or replaced.

Thank you Bob for inspiring me and so many journalists of my generation who looked and learned and admired a master craftsman at work.
— Vincent Power
Sincere condolences to Robert's family on his passing. His journalism was exemplary but his reporting on the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre will live long in the memory. It was not just his description of the barely describable but his own visceral rage at its inhumanity. If the latter was what made him 'controversial' then what a tribute to his work and to his life.
— Emily O'Reilly

Sincere condolences to Robert's family and friends. He was a man of integrity and truth poured from his pen. His likes will not be seen again.
— Jo, Galway
To Robert’s family and wide circle of friends, you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. Robert was a voice of humanity, justice, knowledge and a fierce defender of truth and using that truth to hold all powers to account. His generosity and love of human life, as well as, his relentless shining of his intellect on behalf of the downtrodden and oppressed peoples of the world. In particular his obvious love of and desperation for the people of Lebanon brought a spotlight of mans inhumanity to man. May he rest in peace and may his Spirit continue to inspire future generations
— Brian Crowley Bandon
Hugely shocked to hear of Robert's unexpected passing. He was the only Journalist I have trusted for many years - am sick to death of the biased propaganda coming from Western journalists, and Robert Fisk was a writer admired worldwide for his integrity and sense of ethics. He knew who the culprits are and thanks to him the world is much more educated about the true state of affairs in the Middle East. He is an enormous loss to our world - his likes will not be seen in Journalism or political writing again. Devastating this is, as we badly need truth-telling rather than propaganda and lies. Rest in Peace dear man - will sadly, sadly miss your contributions in The Independent. I long ago gave up on Irish "journalism".
— Marianne

A brave and courageous journalist who sought out the truth in the news and whose commentary in print and in word has enriched our understanding of the Middle East in particular. He set a high bar for his colleagues to aspire to. He is sorely missed. May he rest in peace.
— Tom Stephens
