Finola,

My deepest sympathies to you and all the family on Robert's sad passing. I always enjoyed your postings in the Roaring Water Journal and as a result I found a long lost 1st Cousin last year. I will be thinking of you in the months ahead and hope that you get some strength from the outpouring of condolences here in West Cork.

May Robert rest in Peace.
— Christine Barry (Leahy)

What a beautiful service and tribute to Robert, Finola! I’m so happy it was live cam/recorded. I learned so much about Robert, his level of depth was formidable. I knew that when we met, but the service revealed so much more. What a soul mate he was to you. Must admit, I much prefer your service to the ones I’ve been to here in the states.
Sending you love and heartfelt sadness for your loss. xox
— Jane & Tom Hagy

Heartbroken at the loss of my dear friend Robert. Fellow musician, canal traveler and digger, Morris dancer, and a friend in good times and bad, since 1965.
He should still be remembered for writing the seminal book on England's Canal architecture at the age of 23. A great loss to any community he called home, and I send my love to all the family.
— Paul Dyson, Burbank California

We offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to Finola and the extended family on this sad occasion but also raise a toast to the memory of the polymath of Ballydehob who we will all miss more than we yet realise. Robert was behind so many of the great things in the village - the music, the Ballydehob Arts Museum, the historical and cultural life and - along with Finola - the unimpeachable Roaringwater Journal, the umbilical cord keeping so many of us outliers connected to west Cork events. The breadth of his interests and talents kept us all entertained, amused, enlightened and educated and his legacy will live on.

It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the passing of a cherished colleague, Robert Harris, here at Fastnet Trails. To Finola we send you our deepest sympathy in the sudden loss of the light of your life. As a committee member for the past number of years Robert’s contribution has been immense. His work on the many interpretive boards will stand as a testament to his meticulous design skills and his love of place. Ballydehob, Schull and the Mizen peninsula have lost a true friend. Indeed Robert, one of nature’s true gentlemen, championed the cause of the whole of West Cork in his many Roaring Water Journal Blogs. He also championed the cause of that humble mammal, the hare. So, dearest Robert:

“Thread lightly along the trails across Elysian fields and to your path the hares will come to salute as you proceed ”.

From all at Fastnet Trails

— Liz Curry
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. We've never met, but I have been a huge fan of the Roaringwater Journal site for years. The acumen and fluently excellent transmission of lore and knowledge has always been underpinned by the warmth and joy of your shared life journey. Please, Ms Finlay, if you find a way to continue, do so. I spent some time in Tanzania and the local phrase, in Swahili, in times of inconsolable loss is 'poli sana'. It simply means, 'I share your pain'. Please accept a 'poli sana' from a stranger. Best, Ger Galvin.
— Ger Galvin
I was so sorry, Finola, to hear that Robert has died. Ye were a great team. He made such a contribution with you in matters historical and cultural, and in other areas too. My sympathies.

There is no death where constant love remains,
Though sorrow keens and heartache pains.
When the soft winds blow through the heather hills of West Cork,
And in warm country hearths the fires send clouds of gentle turfsmoke heavenward
Robert will be there, listening to the banter.
When the wild Atlantic breeze tears in from Roaringwater Bay, it will have his voice.
While he's just in a separate room with his Maker seeking soft advice about all those natural matters he wondered about.
He has the answers now, but always, always, he will live on forever in Finola's heart.
You see there is no death when someone has lived and loved so much,
As such he will always be remembered
