A shocking news and a Sad news about Prof. Rory O'Connor.
A Wonderful Guide and a Good teacher. Can never forget. Will Miss You Sir.
Kindly accept my Deepest Condolences. RIP Prof Rory O'Connor.

I happened to get introduced with Rory through Dr. Ita Richardson at Lero back in 2010. And later ran into him at the sidelines of EuroSPI conference the same year and a couple of times through Lero workshops afterwards. He always made impression by getting involved and being open to help out as if he knew you for long. A very friendly and gentle man he was. I hope and wish his legacy of software engineering research continues and is taken even further where he left. Rory will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his colleagues in particular and the research community in general in years to come. My profound sympathies to his family.

I'm so sorry to hear such sad news. I remember him as a young boy on his visits to Kenmare. May the Good Lord have Mercy on his Soul. R.I.P.

I'm shocked and deeply saddened to learn about Rory's passing. He was a devoted husband who cherished his wife and family above all else. He was also a hearty soul who excelled at his job, lifelong learning and life.
Sending love and strength to his immediate and extended family and the many, many, many global friends who will miss him as will I. It was an honor to have known him. RIP Rory.
— Carol Dekkers, USA
Even though I never had the opportunity to meet Rory in person, I had the honor to publish with him about the ISO/IEEE 29110. In the process, I became to know the great human being and professional Rory was. He kindly open the doors to more collaborations. I bow to continue the work in progress in his memory. I live and work in Ecuador. This is a proof of how far Rory´s legacy has travelled around the world and how many souls and hearths Rory touched. He will be missed for many people, including me. Peace for Rory and his Family.
— Sandra Sanchez

I am deeply saddened and shocked to know untimely passed away of Rory. I have interacted him many times as editorial board member and on research related issues. He was wonderful person and always ready to help whenever needed. My deepest condolences to his family. May God give him eternal rest and the family the strength to bear the great pain.
— Prof. Alok Mishra, Turkey, India
Rory was my supervisor, words seem too scarce here to describe him as a generous, kind, and thoughtful human being. Rory always motivated me to perform above my potential during my PhD. Such an irreplaceable loss and his absence will always be missed. May his soul rest in peace and all the prayers for his family to find strength to bear this loss.
— Mehvish Rashid

May the remembrance of Rory act as an inspiration to distinguished/noble deeds.

In March 2019, he acted as the opponent during my PhD student's Licentiate seminar. After the seminar, we had a pleasant dinner altogether during which he shared sequences of his life with his family. I do not know his family. "Of the Sepulchres" has helped me facing death. Thus, I share it here..perhaps it will heal..a bit..and supports his family..

I'm shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Rory's passing. I met Rory for the first time 11 years ago at the ISO/IEC SC7 meeting. Over the years we became more than colleagues. He was such a great person, always helpful and supportive, with a great sense of humour. He was extremely productive in research, teaching, organizing conferences and publishing. I would like to express my sincere condolences to Margaret, his children, and family. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Margaret, Roisin and Cormac

I was so shocked to hear of Rory's death. We had a regular lunch date in Baden Baden for some time. I knew you often holidayed in France before he came over here to the conference in Baden Baden. We networked here, we collaborated, he reviewed and he wrote for special editions I was involved in. He was a wonderful colleague and a great academic. I am still coming to grips with his death. My sincere sympathy to you all, Hugh

— Thomas Nolan
So sorry for your loss xxxx
— Kim
I was so shocked to hear of Rory's sudden and untimely departure. I first met Rory 5 years ago at the NSAI's national standards ICT committee that he hosted and facilitated in DCU. Rory was so easy to get on with and nothing was a problem. In June 2018 he was a key person in jointly hosting the EURAS conference in standards and research with NSAI and Microsoft in DCU. We here in the ICT standards community in both the NSAI and ISO/IEC have lost a great friend. My deepest sympathies to all the O Connor family and his colleagues in DCU. May he rest in peace.
— Mary White NSAI
I too was shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Rory, whom I first met in DCU in the early nineties. I shall always remember his warmth, positivity and energy.
Sincere condolences to his family and close friends.
— Norah Power UL
I wish to pass my sincere condolences to Rory's family. We were all so shocked to hear of sudden and unexpected passing of such a wonderful educator and person.

Rory was wonderful ally to Openet and the wider software industry. Rory's passion was to give the very best to his students which often would go beyond the lecture hall or his office. This was evident when he would invite us in to co-present in his lectures, on when he would turn up at Openet graduate events. We will miss Rory very much, but this spirit lives on.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
— Niall O'Connell (Openet)
My Deepest condolences to Rory's family.
— Jacob Byrne - Current DCU Student
To the O'Connor family

I was not a colleague of Rory's for very long but long enough to know that he was gentle and kind.
He always had time to chat and rolled up his sleeves to help out.... with anything.

My heartfelt condolences for your profound loss.
— Caoimhe O'Broin, DCU

— O'Toole Family
My deepest and most sincere condolences to Rory's family on his sudden passing.

It is hard to believe that one of the kindest people I knew is no longer with us. Rory was such a kind-hearted person and he was a fierce friend to so many.

In all his travels, some of which I was lucky to join him on over the past 20 years, he always talked proudly of his children Róisín and Cormac, and lovingly of his wife Margaret.

He was such a helpful and intelligent gentleman - the most wonderful of colleagues. His sense of humour brightened every meeting or conference that was fortunate enough to have him.

He touched everybody around him in the most positive way imaginable. He will be sorely missed by all those who were lucky enough to have known him. Like me.
— Marion Lepmets
The first time I met Rory 13 years ago at the WG24 (ISO/IEC JC1 SC7) meeting in Luxembourg. During all these years he has supported very enthusiastically the conversion of the Mexican MoProSoft software development process model into the ISO /IEC 29110 standard for Very Small Entities and its promotion.

His smile and his kindness will always accompany me.
Rest in peace.
— Hanna Oktaba (Mexico)
I have known Rory since I lectured him as an undergraduate here at DCU. He was a bright, ambitious and hard-working individual who always had time for others. These traits stayed with him throughout his career and I can only express my sincerest condolences to his family and friends at his awful, untimely loss.
— Renaat Verbruggen
A terrible loss for everyone who knew Rory and got to interact with him in any capacity. I was lucky to be in DCU and know him, he was always extremely helpful and a pleasure to talk to. Rest in Peace Rory.
— Riain Condon
Deeply sad to her about Rory’s passing. I’ve first met Rory in DCU in 2006, when as a newbie to academia, I’ve received great support and encouragement from him. Our paths crossed again in 2018 and was delighted to be working with Rory again.
Rory was an absolute gentleman, kind and so very generous with his time. His good humor and funny ties brought a smile on every time.
Sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
— Monica Kelly, DCU
From the first time I met Rory I counted him as a friend, and so he proved to be. I always felt that Rory was the type of person who you could depend on, in both good and not so good times. As attested to by the many condolence messages here, Rory had many rare qualities, including humility. A great man, will miss you Rory.

I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Rory's sudden passing.
I met Rory for the first time three years ago in Dublin during the SPICE conference. From that conference, we have lived great professional and leisure moments in Dublin, SPICE, and EuroSPI. Rory was an outstanding and kind man who always had good advises, a hand to help you, a smile on his face, and a pint of beer to share wonderful moments wherever we were. I will always remember the support Rory gave me over these years.

My heartfelt condolences to Rory’s family & friends. Rest in peace.

Rory was a lovely colleague and a huge talent and will be a big loss to all of us in DCU. Recently, I had the great pleasure of publishing with him, Paul (Clarke) and Murat (Yilmaz) and was looking forward to future such collaborations (Rory's enthusiasm and positivity were infectious) which sadly now are not to be.

My deepest condolences to his wife and family at this very sad time.
— Brian Leavy (DCU Business School)
Rory was a great person. I had the chance to meet him several times, during ISO or conferences meetings all around the world. He was a globetrotter, always keen at helping and providing advices, and with a great sense of humour. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Margaret, Róisín and Cormac,
We have no words to express how sad we feel.
Rory was a great person, always willing to help everyone. We will miss him a lot, not only from a professional point of view, but also on a personal level. We will never forget the great times with him and will keep the good memories in a special place in our hearts.
Our heartfelt condolences,
— Prof. Antonia Mas & Toni Mesquida, Spain
Five years ago, I met Prof. Rory O'Connor for the first time, as the class representative for Computer Applications. I worked with him throughout the five years and I witnessed first hand Rory's vigorous work ethic and his strong desire to improve the school for staff and students alike.

I and many other students found Rory to be someone who you could approach with ease and confidence and he always did his best to ensure you were comfortable and he always listened and acted. Just this year, Rory taught some of my Software principles classes and despite the early hour of these classes, he made you want to show up. That's just the kind of lecturer he was.

He had so much more to give and to achieve, but I know without his leadership in DCU, my degree wouldn't be as good as it was.

My deepest condolences to family and friends. He will be sorely missed by many at home and abroad.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
— James Nolan (Computer Applications Graduate 2019)
Dear Rory’s family, I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember the support Rory gave me over the years and all the good things he did for the School of Computing. We’ll miss him a lot. Rest in peace, Rory.
— Jennifer Foster
I have never met Rory in person - he reviewed my PhD thesis and we communicated via emails on a number of occasions during conferences, journal paper reviews. I recall in one of the emails that we will meet at one of the conferences - I was hoping to meet him in person but it did not work out. For me, Rory will live on with his insightful ideas and corrections he offered to my research work. Rest in peace Rory.
— Anup Shrestha - Australia
I am so deeply saddened by Rory's premature passing. I owe him a lot. He believed in me and gave me the right push to do my best, to prove myself worthy of his trust. As a colleague as well as in his role as Heed of School, he was the same kind man, ready to listen more and always before talking. He cared, genuinely, and we will miss him terriby. My thoughts are with his young family, Margaret, Cormac and Roisin, of whom he was so proud. May he rest in peace.
— Alessandra Mileo, School of Computing, DCU
I would like to pass on my deepest condolences to Rory's family and his loved ones.
I have met personally Rory for the first time 12 years ago in a plane between London and India on the way to a standardization SC7 meeting. This first face to face meeting was quite funny and was at the image of Rory's personality: cheerful, full of energy, always very helpful and professional. I had then the privilege to meet Rory regularly at conferences and standardization meetings. And finally, I had the great honor to defend my PhD last December, with Rory as Jury president. I am so sorry. Rory will be sadly missed.
