I had the privilege to read these words on the occasion of Sean’s funeral

A Practical Joker

He loved fun with his words and his legendary wit
Now it’s hard to find the right words that seem fit
On this strangest of journeys ..a sad coming home
To face the stark truth that he’s now really gone

‘Good with his hands’ and sharp with his tongue
A true practical joker second to none
Who will we go to when things may break down
Or we need to lift spirits ..Now he’s not around ?

A master of stories never stuck for a quip
A belly of laughs and a mind like a whip
But I know his one liners Written down on a page
Could Never sound good as the times when he said
“He could resist everything but temptation “
See what I mean …it gets lost in translation

So Who will I call to find fun in life’s blows
To light the black humour no matter how low
Who will I find on a wavelength of thought
That needs no explaining and no filtered talk

It’s the end of an era -A huge sign of our age
Like Elvis has now left the building
The joker has now left the stage
Slan leat Sean
Fear Grinn is fear uasal cruthanta a bhi é

RIP Uncle Sean, & what an uncle you were, always jolly, happy full of life & stories & always made everyone feel a million dollars around you, you were a great father, husband & grandfather & your kids idolised you, I know you were so proud of all them, cause I’ve a load of snaps on my phone, but Friday showed everyone else why.
You had loads of time for my family too, We had great times over the years too, from a kid right up to adulthood. We enjoyed times in dublin, Kerry, spain, uk, & yours in killinick. I won’t mention you getting lost in the apartment 😂
I’m so glad we have all these memories & you will never be forgotten, we will look after your beloved Viney the mad thing she is, she’s so loved like you were. I’ll miss our what’s app keeping updates on our lives.
KEEP a watch down on us all & good luck for now Uncle Sean.
All our love Rosemary, Graham, Megan & Calum xxx

Linda, so sad to hear of Sean's passing. So many memories of your dad from our teenage years to a truly unforgettable day when Sean came to my house in Sydney. We had such a laugh with Viney and the infamous diamond! I could not believe he made the effort to come all the way out during his holiday but it speaks to who he was. Just a lovely, funny, kind man who made time for people. A beautiful farewell today, you all did your dad proud. My heart is with you all at this sad time. My deepest condolences to Viney, Linda, John, Stephen, Michael, Tom and all the extended Byrne family.
— Helen O'Byrne - Sydney, Australia
My Granddad was an incredible person. Although separated by geography for much of my life, his presence was always in the back of my mind.

Throughout the years, I’ve always used Granddad’s life as a North Star and a source of guidance. He lived life to the fullest. He loved sport, people, and laughter but also had courage, moral conscience, and heart like none other. Whether it’s stories of him playing Rugby, making the hard but morally correct decision, or the story of how he married my Granny, and followed through on his promises to her family, he’s given all Byrne family a model to live by and aspire to. Whenever I feel that I’m incapable of something or that the right choice is too hard to make, I reflect on the idea that I am the Grandson of Sean Byrne.

I’m also grateful for how much he made life fun. He always made me cry laughing with his wit and humor. I remember him telling me, “Eddie if you ever need anything. Anything at all. Please don’t hesitate to call me, and I will tell you how to get on without it.” Granddad also loved people so much, and his gregarious personality was infectious. I was always surprised by how he made so many friends whenever he came to visit us in the US. Before I’d even see him, he’d already made friends with the neighbors! Everyone he met loved him.

Granddad was larger than life. His values, memory, and presence will be with us forever. RIP
— Eddie Byrne

I’m very sorry to my family and everyone else who’s lives were touched by my Granddad Sean. Although I’ve lived in the US my whole life, I’ve always felt very close to my family in Ireland. When I get the chance to see or speak to them, the love they give always leaves an impact on me that lasts. Sean served the ultimate purpose and he served it well. He brought tons of life into this world and gave all that life, love and valuable lessons on how to act and treat others. Through his actions my Granddad taught me what it means to be a good person. He was a model for dignity, humility, and love in a human being. I couldn’t be more grateful for the time I got to spend with him and I am so proud to be a part of his family. I know we will all continue to carry the values that Sean embodied.
