Eithne,
Deepest (very belated) condolences to you and all the family.
Both he and Carol welcomed me into their home, sometime in the 1970s when I travelled to Dublin for an interview, and needed to stay overnight. Not forgetting that the Dineen household door on Emmett Square was always open, if I needed sustence during those long hitching treks between Baltimore and Cork. Judging by the tributes on this column,
despite his outstanding academic achievements, he was a loyal and generous colleague and kept his links to West Cork

I was late hearing of Sean's death, so this is late, but the sadness is no less for that. Sean was a most impressive man on many fronts, all of them appropriately covered in other Condolences. As well as his extraordinary professional gifts and abilities he was a man whom it was hard to fall out with, such was his loyalty to his friends and his readiness to laugh at life's absurdities. Ireland is the poorer without him.
Sincere Sympathy to Sr.Mary Magdalen & all the Dineen family & friends on the passing of Sean R.I.P.
For me, the legacy of Sean Dineen is the Mathematics Department in UCD and his mathematical family - children and grandchildren, an inclusive Dublin Club, with the cosy atmosphere of the best kind of Drop-in Centre. Like Trevor West before him in Trinity he helped to make Dublin a go-to place for heavy hitters from around the world of mathematics, notably Spain, Brazil and Argentina. I wrote five papers with him and am still trying to plumb their depths.
To Deirdre, Stephen & all the Dineen family,
My sincere condolences on the death of Sean. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis,

My deepest sympathy to all of Sean's family. He was a pleasure to work with and dedicated to his students, and a huge support to the Erasmus programme. May he rest in peace.
Very sorry to hear of Seán's passing. He was a major influence on a generation of maths students at UCD. I remember him particularly as one of the driving forces in getting the Economics and Finance degree off the ground in UCD in the late 90's, early 00's. RIP.
Deepest sympathy to Stephen and to all your family. Sean was always a most congenial colleague in UCD, where he shared the G3 corridor in UCD Newman for many years with those of us in Politics.
I worked with Sean over many years on Lakelands Residents Association. He was always a pleasure to engage with and he was a great promoter of everything that went on, and that was good for Lakelands and the Stillorgan area. His dedication to publishing several volumes of “Lakelands Past & Present” is a great legacy for him to leave. May he RIP.
Sincere Sympathy to Traolach and all the Dineen Family on the passing of Sean may he rest in peace

I send deepest sympathy to Donal and to all in Seán's family on the sad passing of Seán.
During his undergraduate years at UCC, Seán was one of the 40 (or so) residents of the Honan Hostel, on the edge of the main campus. Seán contributed greatly to the lively and friendly atmosphere in "the Honan" (and so too did Donal later in the 60s). Seán was one of the finest of people.

Seán was a well renowned mathematician with other Professors coming to UCD to learn from him. He had a quirky sense of humour, with a glint in his eye. Most dedicated to all of us in Lakelands, he will be sadly missed.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the Dineen family on the death of Sean. Great memories of Sean as a serious hurler and the numerous chats on his visits to Clon.
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Prof Dineen. He was responsible, on his visit to Coimbra in 1996, for my Erasmus year at UCD and to a certain extent for my academic career. We met several times, and I remember him with great esteem and friendship. My sympathies to the family
I wss very sad to hear of Sean's passing. Sean was always great company and i remember fondly learning how to fish with Sean during one of his visits to Kent Ohio. Me thinks he might just mèet up with his friend Joe Diestel for a pint and a serving of some mathematics.
Our deepest sympathies to Eithne and Donal and extended Dineen families on your sad loss, May Sean Rest in Peace ,
Stephen, so sorry to hear about your Dad. My thoughts are with you and your family. Ann Marie
My deepest condolences to Eithne and the Dineen family on the passing of Seán.
Sincere condolences to the Dineen family on Sean's passing. May he rest in peace.
I'm very sorry to hear of Sean's death. My deep sympathy goes out to his family. Sean encouraged and supported my PhD work with wit, deep insight, and friendship. He even loaned me his car on one occasion, my first ever attempt to drive on the left side of the road (it was not entirely disastrous). I recall his advice to me about it: you only need to watch out for what is in front of you. You'll be to the front of other drivers who are behind you or to your side, so no need to worry about them! Logical, a bit irreverent, and a reminder to not take things too seriously. That was just like him.
My heartfelt condolences to you Eithne and the Dineen family on the sad passing of Seán. He was such a wonderful person, such a good fellow. We where comrades in the early 70ies when we struggled to become mathematicians researching in a new field and supporting each other by many letters and on several meetings.
Sincere condolences to Deirdre and Stephen, to Sean's siblings Traolach, Donal and Eithne and to all the Dineen family on the sad occasion of his death. He was a brilliant mathematican, inspirational teacher, an internationally renowned researcher and gave generous support and service to mathematicians in Ireland. I always enjoyed his company and listening to his entertaining stories. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.
Sincerest sympathies to Stephen and to all of the Dineen family on the loss of your Dad. May he rest in peace.

I was saddened to learn of Sean's passing. He was one of the first lecturers I got to know when I started in UCD nearly 25 years ago. He absolutely did everything he could to support his students and I always appreciated his hellos and chats on the UCD pathways as we crossed campus. May he rest in peace.
Sincere sympathy to Donal, Traolach,Maura,Eithne and Emer. May Sean rest in peace.
