I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Sean's sudden passing. I count myself very fortunate to have gotten to know Sean during my time in UCD Engineering and will be forever grateful for his advice, encouragement, humour, friendship, and the great generosity with which he shared his time throughout all classes and projects, great or small. My deepest condolences to all of Sean's family.

My very deepest sympathies to Jutta, son and all of Sean’s family. I was very saddened to hear of Sean’s sudden passing. Sean was a true friend and colleague with a brilliant mind and unstinting good humour. His office was always open and he never wavered from an opportunity to discuss technical or philosophical issues on research and College topics of mutual interest. I will miss him greatly as one of the most authentic gentlemen within UCD Engineering. A tragic loss; rest in peace Sean.
— Don MacElroy, Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering

Sincere sympathies to all the Sheridan family.
I was one of his undergrad students back in 2008/2009, “Photonics”! I admit, I never understood the lectures but I loved attending them because of him! He was always making little funny comments and jokes and I would take notes of them for later when I study for the exam to cheer me up!
The day before the final exam, he gave me a little piece of advice: “don’t marry anyone from academia. They’re too broke! He’ll just take you to the next paid conference for the honeymoon! That’s why I took my wife to Australia for our honeymoon!” And that’s the last thing I remember of him. ❤️
He was an amazing man. He will be truly missed. May he rest in peace.

Seán was the best colleague you could ask for. A highly accomplished researcher and educator, but at the heart of it all was a fantastic person. He always wanted the best for his students and colleagues and was incredibly supportive towards them. I always enjoyed meeting him on the corridor on his way to make one of his many cups of tea. “Chief”, “Another day another dollar”, “No rest for the wicked” were his more common phrases, as well as bemoaning Mayo’s latest failure to beat the Dubs. The UCD Engineering staff common room will be an emptier place without him. Gone but never forgotten.
May he rest in peace.
Deepest sympathies to Jutta, Daniel, Lily, Maire, Louise, Tom, Michael and the entire Sheridan family.
— Vincent Hargaden, UCD

I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of John's untimely demise. In his passing away, the optics community lost an outstanding scholar and a passionate teacher, The void left by his passing away will be felt by his colleagues, friends, admirers, and students for a long time to come. I had the privilege to have known him for many years and interact with him in person and through correspondence. He was always ready to help and share his knowledge freely. John had a great sense of humor and his laughter was infectious. His conversations with me revealed that he was very much interested in Indian history. I will deeply miss you, John.
My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. May he rest in peace!
— Kehar Singh IIT Delhi

I bumped into Sean (or JTS as he signed off with on email) regularly in the staff room in the Engineering building. He was such a gentleman; always with a smile on his face and up for a chat and a joke (and always managed to get Mayo into the conversation!). He will be missed.

May he rest in peace.

Jutta and Daniel,

My deepest sympathies to you both on Seán’s passing. He was such an important mentor and friend to me. He said yes with a hearty laugh to a crazy idea when many others were saying no. That led to the development of a technology that has made a real change in an industry far apart from his own.

His generosity, kindness, wit, intelligence, loyalty and deep love and respect for his family, and especially both of you, will persist in the hearts and minds of all his colleagues and friends. I am blessed to have known him and have benefitted from his friendship and mentorship.

You are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. He truly was an amazing human.

RIP Seán
