Sr. Carmel McCarthy

My deepest sympathy to the McCarthy family on the passing of Sr Carmel and especially to her sister Mary Lavin, also an educator, who taught me Science in Mount Sackville in the early 80s. May Sr Carmel now rest in peace and enjoy the rewards of eternal life.

I was a student teacher in Carysfort College where Sr. Carmel was a model teacher with her knowledge, dedication and willingness to dialogue and debate scripture. What I learned in her class inspired me many years later to complete a PhD in Theology and Religious Studies.

I was a student of Carmel's in UCD in the early 1970s and she was indeed a wonderful teacher as so many have already testified. Not only did she manage to make learning the Hebrew language appear easy but she brought to life, often with great humour, the many characters in Hebrew, Greek and Syriac texts to which she introduced us. That so many of her students went on to hold University positions internationally is in no small measure the result of Carmel's teaching and influence. May she now rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to the family, community, and friends of my dear teacher, Doktormutter, colleague and friend, Professor Carmel McCarthy, MRIA. I studied and worked closely with Professor McCarthy in the Department of Near Eastern Languages, University College Dublin for 15 years (1992-2007). I cannot express how much I learned from Carmel about languages, texts, scholarship, work and being human. Her passing marks the end of an era and the worldwide community of scholarship has lost one of the great scholars of the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible. Carmel’s personal humility and diffidence about her scholarship belied her global stature. I am proud to call myself her student. I will remember her kindness and wisdom always with gratitude and fondness.

My heartfelt condolences to the McCarthy family and the Sisters of Mercy on the death of Sr Carmel. She taught me Biblical Hebrew at UCD and those years are among the most challenging and rewarding of my life. I will always be grateful to her for the riches she laid before me. May she rest in eternal peace.

Sincere condolences to Carmel's family and to her sisters in the Mercy Congregation. I was privileged to be her student in UCD and later to work with her for many years on the Orlagh Bible Week. A wonderful woman of learning, dedication and faith. May the God she served so faithfully enfold her in light and life eternal.

For the past ten years or more, Carmel gathered a little group of adult learners to read texts in Hellenistic and Biblical Greek, meeting weekly during term times. Our group continued, undaunted, via Zoom during Covid and even managed to meet in person for the last time on June 6th - just five weeks ago. This was an extraordinarily rich experience for those of us privileged to be part of it. We will always be grateful for Carmel’s hospitality, fidelity, patience, quiet humour and erudition which was hidden behind her modest and unassuming demeanour. Thank you, Carmel. Rest in peace. Our sincere sympathies to Carmel’s family and Community.

Carmel was Emeritus Professor of Hebrew and Syriac in Near Eastern Languages at UCD and a member of the Royal Irish Academy. She was a learned and internationally renowned scholar and an immensely thoughtful and kind colleague. UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics wish to extend sincere condolences to her friends, colleagues and family at this sad time.

Our deepest sympathy goes to Carmel's family and her sisters. For many years Carmel participated in our common work on the edition of the Biblia Hebraica Quinta. She was an outstanding scholar and a wonderful colleague and friend. She will be sorely missed by the BHQ family. May she rest in peace.

I was one of Carmel's students in UCD fifty years ago and she became a lifelong friend to me and to Elizabeth, my wife. Carmel combined immense learning and scholarship with a quiet kindness and Christ-like spirit, though she was a strict teacher and all her students benefitted from that.
