When we interviewed Sr Martha for 'The Voyage Out', one of our questions was about the impact of the Second Vatican Council on her life. 'Oh! ... First time I began to live. You know, you were no longer boxed in. You had a mind of your own. That is really true ... The freedom!' Those changes, from so-called 'blind' obedience to personal responsibility, came about half way through Sr Martha's life, when she had already spent over 20 years in Malaysia and was about to embark on a further 6 years in Thailand. That 2008 interview is memorable, particularly for a hilarious story about walking the children two by two, hand in hand, from school to church in Kuala Lumpur, turning around and seeing the monkeys following, two by two, hand in hand. We were sceptical, but when we visited her around her 100th birthday she insisted it was true. A great missionary and a remarkable woman. May she rest in peace and rise in glory!
