I only met St.-John a few times in the course of my work in the mental health tribunal system. He made an immediate impression on me. His courtesy, good humour, charm, expertise - underpinned by a steely determination to get to the truth and do things correctly and fairly - were a shining example of what a good chairperson - indeed a good person - should be. I wish I had had more time in his amiable company. May he Rest In Peace. Sincere condolences to his family, relatives, and friends.

I only witnessed a fraction of St. John's career but there was no doubt he was exceptional. No matter how busy the law centre was, he would tour the office chatting to all of the staff. Whether it was work or home life he was interested and knew how to listen. Accompanied by a mug of coffee it often happened he only got a few sips in between phone calls and appointments. Hours later the contents of the same mug would be re-heated in the microwave and at that stage I often told him it was fit to tar the road with! St. John had a wealth of knowledge and wisdom but never put it on show. Calm was his mantra. Everyone was his equal, including his clients to whom he afforded much kindness and advised them wisely through difficult periods in their lives. St. John's final letter to a client when closing a file was particularly unique in that even though he had been tasked to advise and guide, he in a way reversed the roles by sincerely thanking them for their instructions, conveying humbly the pleasure of being of service to them and always wished them well for the future. St. John Donovan was a great man too for coming up with ideas and plans that possibly would work as a cartoon sketch but not in reality, many memorable moments of these. Sincere sympathy to St. John's family, friends and may loving memories support you in the days to come.

It is with a deep sadness that I am writing this condolence for St Johns obsequies. It’s seems like yesterday we were writing up reports for people. I’m so sorry st John has gone from you and he will be much missed by you his family. I knew him professionally but over the last 16 years I got to know him very well. He was always always so professional, gentle , empathetic, fair, kind and knowledgeable sometimes in difficult circumstances. He had a vast wisdom- I am minded of the poem The Village Schoolmaster “and still they gazed and still their wonder grew that one same head could carry all he knew “
That was StJohn- a font of knowledge. God rest your gentle spirit and soul ST John and sincere condolences to your family. I was honoured to count you as a friend
