He was an exceptionally gifted craftsman whose knowledge of his craft and the perfection of his work was so special. One of the last Cork cabinet makers, he was a seamless link with earlier generations of Cork craftsmen. No second guessing with Stephen, he was direct, and totally honest in his dealings, but always generous, humorous, and kind hearted. His memory and legacy will live on in the furniture and related stories we hold of him and we will remember him every time we sit to eat on our/his set of Cork 11 bar chairs.

Stephen McAuliffe was my Agent, placing my family story on the McSweeny Chalice in The Holly Bough 2021. I met him 5 years ago, well into his prime, through the holy auspices of Msgr Thomas Leonard of New York City, an Irish "relative" of the McAuliffe family for decades. We stayed in touch because we both wrote real letters with a fountain pen. He gave me the face of Jesus in marquetry that I look at every morning. On his 95th, I sent him a bottle of Grace O'Malley whisky to top off his Powers. He had an unmistakeable laugh and an unforgettable smile framed by a twinkle in his eye. We were fast friends for too short a time. I miss him already. May his soul and the souls of all the Faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace.
