As my first employer Tom thought me many skills I continue to use today. He never forgot a name or manners!! Totting up on the cardboard and counting out your change. I'm very saddened to hear the news of the passing Tom, a loyal and generous neighbour of almost 50 years. In days gone by, Brackens shop was a central part of our community of what was then only 7-8 houses on the Block Road and those in lower Beladd. 'Run up to Bracken's for a loaf of bread and a pint of milk' - a mantra which many of us will fondly recall. The personal touch was always evident - a great welcome and - most memorably, the totting-up on the piece of brown paper! I had the treasured pleasure of spending time with Tom and Nancy in January as they were coming to terms with Declan's untimely passing. We chatted and reminisced and I am so glad I got that opportunity. Tom lived a long and healthy life. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. My love and sympathy goes out to Nancy, Phil, Enda, Sean, Kevin, Ann, Michael and Feargal and to extended family, relatives and friends. Tom's destination is made all the more special by the fact that Declan is waiting with open arms for his dad. May they both enjoy their heavenly reward.
