Thank you to everyone involved in the organisation of such a simple moving and inclusive mass yesterday to bid a final farewell to a truly saintly human being. It was wonderful to see the church packed to overflowing and in particular it was fitting that the Defence Forces were so well represented and that he was carried on the shoulders of a military bearer party to his final resting place. I was privileged to serve with him in Somalia where he was chaplain with the 1st Tpt Company and I can still see him with hammer in hand working alongside his comrades to set up our camp in Baidoa. May he rest in peace and he will not be forgotten by those of us who were fortunate to know him.
— Maurice O'Donoghue Comdt Retd

Sincere condolences to the Murphy family, extended families, Bishop & fellow Priests, Military Compatriots, Parishioners & his very special friends, not forgetting his beloved Fountainstown swimming pals on the sudden & untimely passing of Canon Michael Murphy.
We got to know him when he came to Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria every year with an older Priest. We quickly made friends with him & found him to be the most thoughtful, inspiring & down to earth Priest & it was a pleasure to meet up with him for coffee, a meal or just a chat.He was a lovely, caring & understanding Priest to say Mass while there also.He could converse on any subject brought up & we enjoyed his company immensely.
He swam in the sea very early every morning but, nothing could compare to when they'd be preparing to go home & the thought of his trips to Fountainstown were getting closer. The last time he was here he said he HAD to be at the swim the next morning as have funny feeling there was a bet he wouldn't turn up but, in true Canon Michael style he did turn up as someone from swimming group had come back from warmer climes the week before & were in Fountainstown next morning & he couldn't afford to lose out. He was a truly lovely man.
Thinking of you all at this very sad & upsetting time.
Hopefully Canon Michael you will look down on us & keep us on the right path.
May your gentle soul rest in Eternal Peace with the God that you served & loved so well.
— Gerry & Ann Fehily, Rosscarbery

Scoil Maria Assumpta, Ballyphehane

It was with great sadness and shock we learned of the sudden and untimely death of our beloved friend, Fr Michael, on Saturday last. Fr Michael was a constant in our school for more than twenty years, where he was much loved by the entire School Community.

Fr Michael was a very special human being, he knew and loved Jesus Christ, and consequently, he was the ideal conduit through which the love of Christ was conveyed throughout our school and in the wider community of Ballyphehane.

He was present in the lives of our community, in times of great joy, i.e. births and marriages, and in times of great sadness, death, bereavement, loss. He encouraged, empathised and accompanied all those who faced illness, rejection or other, of life’s misfortunes with a merciful, gentle, non-judgemental manner.

His simplicity and generosity was the beacon that enabled him to talk of, and live out the promise of Christ’s salvation for all.

Our sympathy goes out to the Murphy Family and to his Diocesan Colleagues who will mourn his passing. However, the void he leaves behind, in Ballyphehane, will be felt by all who were privileged to have met Fr Michael, and his legacy should compel us to embrace Christ in the simple things of life, love and family.

Now that his earthly work is done, may he enjoy warmer waters and find eternal rest in the presence of Jesus whom he served so well.

John Walsh.
Chairperson,
Board of Management,

Fr Michael was an amazing man who brought Ballyphehane together. I'm old enough to remember him going to the Pres school when he first joined the parish. Very understanding, and very open to questions when it came to religion during my awkward edgy phase in life. A true gentleman and I'm saddened to hear of his death.
